This book really helped me when I decided to go the next step and style my hair to match my retro wardrobe. It has a section on haircuts, which helped immensely at the hairdresser's, and many period photos of the various hairstyles, all of which are nicely divided by hair length.

What I liked about this book: It is a comprehensive book packed with photos and diagrams from original 1940s sources (with a few hints on modern styling methods). The book starts by covering the different lengths of haircuts (complete with cutting diagrams), how to do curls and waves (the foundation of most of the finished styles), styles for different hair lengths and purposes, and various types of accessories. Most 1940s styles were for medium to short hair. If you want an authentic 1940s look using authentic techniques, this is the book for you.

What I did not like about this book: The majority of the book was obviously copied from public-domain sources and the author does NOT give credit. The book feels flimsy (it is a small, thin paperback) and the number of typos is surprising considering that this is the second edition. There is no modern photography here; the photos are small, black-and-white and sometimes show the style from only one angle.

So often you see really great forties doll costumes for fashion dolls being worn by doll models with hair that just doesn't complete the look.
What the artists needed was this book. Hundreds of photographs and diagrams make it easy to create that forties look painlessly.
However, it's not just for doll artists. I showed the book to several owners of vintage clothing boutiques during a recent cross-country trip, and they went nuts -- they didn't know they could get all the information they wanted in one modern book, they had been relying on very expensive vintage magazines.
The styles are so great, they really translate well into todays' looks, too. After all, hair hasn't changed, just the way it is styled!

Even if you never try these hairstyles on your own this book is highly enjoyable. As a fan, collector, and dabbler of recreating vintage styles and period looks, this book is hard to put down. It's an illustrated history lesson, PLUS it has tons of actual practical information on how the looks were achieved in the 1940s and suggestions on how you too can achieve the looks.
I was very impressed with the depth of information in the
book and the Hollywood starlet pics are a plus. :) It's a slim text but packs a lot.
This book is very high on the glamour meter. I plan on buying all of Daniela Turidich's books!
Highly recommended!

I think the different hairstyles were wonderful in the book. The part I didn't like was the fact you have to flip back and forth when you are holding strands of hair figuring out what to do with them because of the terminology. I think it would have been much more efficient if the book had more step by step details on how to do the styles. It has been discouraging for me to know that achieving some of these do's will take more time than necessary because of the lack of detail in the instructions. I am getting there, with a lot of practice, of course. I do love the idea of a book on how to do a vintage 'do'. For the most part I am thrilled!

I found this book to be just incredible in its illustration on how to work with ones own hair. Not just for the forties style but with some imagination, for creating contemporary hairstyles for those who prefer not to have that straight look. In spite of its compact size, this book is a cornucopia of all kinds of hair tips from haircutting to parting the hair so that one can work easily and change ones look instantly. It has become my bible of hair fashion for sure. I can't wait to order the rest of this series. I love it, I love it, love it!
