I have seen Matt perform twice. He is an amazing, soulful performer and this recording does well in capturing the "live" experience.

On record, Matt can sound a little limited. Live is where this guy does best, and the huge dynamics evident on this record make it, in my opinion, his strongest. He goes from a full-chest, booming busted flat bluesman's holler to softer and soulful with ease, and with surprisingly scant backing. The guy's doing this almost all on his own on this record, with select sax, blues harp, or second guitar backing him up. Really powerful record. My only quibble is that Devil's Bride is not the extended climactic version Andersen typically plays live now, but is more of an abbreviated rocker rather than blues epic. So the only complaint is that I've heard him do better - proof positive that this is a record worth owning, and Matt Andersen is a performer worth seeing.

A great record with an unexpectedly broad range of styles, MA is in great full voice and playing to an excited audience live.
