An engaging look at a lively time in Canadian pop culture history, 3000 Miles makes a promise and delivers. Jay Schneider was a fixture in the (Kitchener-Waterloo) local indie rock scene in the early to mid 1990s, so we spent many hours at many of the same shows. The appeal of this novel is its nostalgia for that time, and the way it captures the energy and mixed emotions. While it was an exciting time for music, it was also a time when a LOT of people had a LOT of problems with depression. Schneider's writing handles this struggle with deft and heart.
I remember these bands. I remember these tours, if not the exact places (since many of the club scenes are set in Montreal), and many indie rock clubs just like these.
My only beef with the book, and the reason this is a four star rather than five star review, is its problematic portrayal of women. The few female characters are quite flat and don't have much to do other than look sexy. If the women were as well drawn as the trio at the centre of the narrative, it might be stronger overall.
All that said, don't get too comfortable. The ending is a real downer.
