The only weakness in the book is that the historical aspects about Lent, while interesting, didn't really fit within the chapters - no connection to the meditative exercises recommended. Also the suggested Gospel passages were different from the Gospel passage already referred to in the prose section. I think it would have been more helpful to study the same passage as discussed in the prose section of the chapter. And the historical aspects of Lent? Perhaps an appendix or a separate chapter rather than interspersed within the chapters?

Decreasing the many things this world has tricked us into thinking are just normal everyday life and increasing Christ-like character in me.
Alicia’s words of encouragement can from a place of honestly and real life. Here is just an example of the teaching which ministered to my soul. “And in the midst of Jesus journey, He felt troubled. Clearly, then a troubled soul is not always the sign of a faith deficit. A troubled soul is sometimes the signature of obedience-in-the-making.” (Alicia Britt Chole)
Fasting is another of those concepts which does not have great appeal to me. But the fasts which Alicia challenges us with throughout this book has made the thought of fasting something I look forward to each day. Fasting: speeding past sorrow, isolation, discontentment, willful sin and withholding brought about change in my soul. I challenge you to read this book and not be changed. I am not sure how it could be done.
I love the format of the book with the day’s teachings, reflection and today’s fast is so full of richness and challenge it caused me to sit with it and desire to know the truth of it more deeply. Alicia’s sharing of the Biblical stories we have heard many times brought new insight and understanding.
Leave that which you have known as decrease and fasting and join me in finding them anew with the Love of our Lord and His longing for us to know Him more in 40 Days of Decrease. “We know nothing of their backstories. But then, in many ways, backstories matter little once Jesus enters the room…. whatever the cause of our physical and spiritual blindness, whatever family we do or do not have, whatever sines or success we count as our own, Jesus’ presence makes this moment the most important moment of our lives.” (Alicia Britt Chole )
This book challenged and encouraged me in unique and meaningful ways. Entering into a season of decrease in order that Christ might expand in and through me, pulls at the desire deep within my soul to know God in deeper ways and to consider "fasting" things such as unforgiveness, judgment, apathy, etc. My faith was challenged and deepened by walking through assignments and statements such as, "The appearance of faith without the fruit of faith and worshipful words without a worship-filled heart are, in Jesus's words, 'vain.' Today, fast all appearances. Fast facades."
This a powerful book and one that is easily used devotionally, with brief but thought-provoking daily readings followed by a time of reflection and response. I, for one, am a different person for having read it. I highly recommend it!
Chole provides historical writing surrounding the days proceeding Easter. For each day, she gives scripture to accompany every section, but leads the reader to personal reflection. The section where she connects the reading with a concept with which to personally challenge ourselves, rings close to any walk in the spirit. The focuses of increasing our decrease are not mere momentary sacrifices, but are related to fruits of the spirit and Godly character. Those who put into practice increasing the decreases of the walk in this book will not just be moved, but changed by having partaken of its wisdom.
