Derek whose father, an Army career man, treated him as though the young Derek were in the military - no love was ever given to the boy. To give you a little golden nibble, "Sir" who Derek was always forced to call his father forced the boy to stand guard at the coffin when his mother passed away. The boy was devasted and only caused the couldren of resentment to bubble up against his father. As soon as he was able to do so, Derek enlisted in the Marine Corps.
Moving on in this novel, Patrick became aware of Derek's business prowess and hired him on the spot. As time moved on, he appointed Derek to head-up the New York office of the Fortune-Rockwell Bank - at which point Derek proved what an outstanding businessman he was. Christina a Texas A&M grad, with her name on the Dean's List every semester in college, proved her keen business sense as an analyst.
Now Maria (Mendoza) and Patrick (Fortune) brought tthem together when Patrick introduced Christina to Derek as his new analyst, while Jack, Patrick's biological son was enjoying this little "dance." Immediately the sparks began to fly between Christina and Derek. However, because of Christina's past office social encounters and Derek's inability to express anything genuine for a woman stunted by his father's cold heart, the two tried to keep their distance. The two tried to keep their relationship professonal. To say they were each smitten with each other would be an understatement. However, neither one was willing to express their true feelings for each other, or be the first to commit their feelings.
Yes, this is a great love story and Crystal did an outstanding presentation of warm, sensual and genuine romantic scenarios. It is heart warming to see how two people who had deep seated inadequacies that prevented them from expressing true love did realize their capabilities.
My personal feeling - the first time Christina really fell for Derek was the Saturday Derek was "babysitting" a little neighbor boy. Christine saw how soft, loving and caring Derek could really be even though she still, at this point in time, wasn't ready to let her guard down and express her feelings for him. A most poitnant place in this book is the red shaw. I'm not going to tell you the significance because I don't want to spoil the intrigue about it for you.
Needless to say, this is a great read, not only because it's a very warm and soul searching book romance novel, but most especially it brings home how sometimes we need to let go of things that keep us from enjoying those we love as well as life itself. It truly steeps in the adage, "....in order to be reborn into something new, you need to die to something and let go." I whole heartedly recommend your reading this book; I certainly did. I never weary reading about The Fortunes!
I bought all of the books identified as fortune, there are several series available. different volumes in the same series are written by different authors. it is surprising how the different styles of writing of the authors contribute to the interest. it adds some twists the series might otherwise not have. I have found authors that I did not know and have subsequently bought several of their other books. I might not have found them at all otherwise.
