This 700 page book is crammed with beekeeping information. It is very detailed in bees' anatomy and behaviour, complete with diagrams. Detailed explanations of how the bees process honey. Sections on how to deal with absolutely every aspect of beekeeping, all showing diagrams and drawings to reference how to do it (bees biology, brood, creating nucleus colonies, feeding, building hives, diseases, extracting honey, plants for bees, how to capture wild hives, recipes, etc., etc., etc).

I've seen this book offered (published originally in 1947) by just about every major beekeeping supplier and its also highly recommended by beekeepers as well.

You might need magnifying glasses to read the small print but this book is absolutely worth the investment. It's the most complete beekeeping book I've ever seen.

HASH(0xa787e468) out of 5 stars Bee Careful July 28 2012
By Ravenous Reader - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
If you are looking for the latest edition of ABC XYZ of Beekeeping, this is not the book you want to buy. It's a reprint with a 2010 publishing date, and no information regarding which edition it is being stated plainly. Shame on someone for not putting REPRINT on the title of this.
This is a reference book that is updated every few years, and this specific, particular book is NOT the latest edition.

Every bit of information in this specific book is from 1947.

There is a lack of new and much more modern and needed information such as varroa mite, small hive beetles, as well as recent problems that have arisen within beekeeping.

I bought this as a gift for my husband thinking it was the latest edition, and it was not. I went so far as to write on the inside cover.

SURPRISE! He knew immediately upon opening the gift that it was not correct, and I felt horrible.

The ONLY reason I am giving this book one star is because Rashid at Amazon customer service listened to me, allowed me to vent, and made things right the best way he could. For that I am grateful.

HASH(0xa7a77a50) out of 5 stars an old information Sept. 4 2007
By Elizabeth Alicia Pagliari - Published on
Format: Hardcover
The best of the book is that was written for a family members who have first hand experience in the field of beekeeping.
Unfortunately the information belongs to 1947, which is the original copyright. It is not 2005 as published by Amazon

HASH(0xa787e684) out of 5 stars An Oldie but Still a Goodie! Sept. 17 2012
By WesternWilson - Published on
Format: Paperback
A.I. Root, a contemporary of Rev. Langstroth, wrote the first edition of this work in 1877 and I believe the last revised edition is this one, published orginally in 1947. While it is not in the truest sense a modern guide to beekeeping, as pest and management techniques are issues now facing beekeepers that Mr. Root never dreamed of, it still contains a wealth of useful learnings. Bees and beekeeping have not changed much since 1877, even if some of their challenges have. This book is filled with minutiae helpful to the most modern of beekeepers and is, IMHO, required reading for every beekeeper or bee-o-phile! It is set up as an alphabetical encyclopedia, but includes an exhaustive appendix in the back, and the book encourages a spontaneous exploration of its astonishingly useful and interesting contents. The photos alone are treasures. And the recipe section is charming. If you are new to beekeeping, you will want to also purchase a more modern manual, but every beekeeper should have this book (as well as Dr. T. Seeley's The Wisdom of the Hive).

HASH(0xa787e924) out of 5 stars Terrible scan filled with many typos on every page; NOT a 2010 edition March 2 2013

This is a bad scan of a very old edition of this work. Whoever brought it out made no effort to correct scanning errors, which are abundant on every page. Shame on them.

HASH(0xa7cc5390) out of 5 stars Wonderful reference book Dec 10 2012

This is an older book, but still very prevalent to raising bees today. There's some good info in this book and great to have as a reference.
