I was forced to look for a new wifi router after my dlink Dir-655 started failing. I searched the internet and all indicators suggested that the ASUS RT-AC66U was a top notch router and simple to install and setup. It is a dual band (2.4 and 5GHz) and although I didnt think I needed a dual band router I was getting it to prepare for the future if current adaptors needed to be upgraded. I was surprised to find my wife's Galaxy SIIX operated at 5GHz as well as my kids Apple lap tops. This is a band I thought I wouldnt be using.
Everything went smoothly ( very easy GUI) and now I have 40% stronger coverage in my home than the dlink provided (inSSIDer). This includes a remote located blu ray player that used to continually lose internet connection and coverage I never had outside.
So far this router has far exceeded my expectations. It is a bit pricey but the device is well made and actually looks pretty good amongst my other components. It took a firmware upgrade during installation effortlessly and from my reading is well supported by ASUS. No regrets with this purchase. Hope this helps you with your investigation.

I used to stick with Linksys brand for my home networking. The first router died after a few years, the second worked OK but the range wasn't great and the last one started dropping connection. The firmware upgrades and trying different channels didn't help much and I decided that it's time to look elsewhere. IT is my field and I knew what parameters to look at. The stability is #1 requirement, followed by support of modern wireless protocols and of course the range. The ease of use wasn't a priority, but even here this router killed the competition. It didn't take too long to find Asus AC-66U. There have been a couple of other options, both from the same Asus series of products. I figured that a few extra bucks won't make a huge difference in a long run and opted for the most recent model. It's been a couple of months since I installed the router. There has been no connection drops or slowness ever since. Not every device in the house supported the new 5Ghz band, but 2.4Ghz worked fine for the legacy devices. The range is impressive. I have the device installed in the basement and the reception is fast and stable in every corner of my house, for every application including P2P, Skype and Netflix. This wasn't the case for any of my previous devices. With absolutely no doubt I'd recommend this router for everyone. This is probably the best option for the home router right now, Feb 2013. Thanks for reading, I hope you find this useful.

I had no problem hooking up to my modem/router. As a double router connection I thought there might be some issues with connection, but as long as you remember to disable the first router's ability to assign IPs you'll have no issues.
It offers more portals for us guys who seem to never have enough, and the transfer speeds to your wireless devices are excellent!

Update: dec 30, 2013 - after only a few months, several FW updates already and device performance degrading more every time...
product is pending RMA from manufacturer and I am considering switching to another brand; very big misses in FW implementation; MAC address only, no machine names for identification ...; bandwidth usage poor diagnostic and basic tools-

great product, works fine just out of the box. delivers high performance like expected; would have appreciated an even larger wifi signal coverage... still, this is the best coverage on the market for domestic use.

I replaced my aging Apple Time Capsule with this router. My setup: Router is connected to a Rogers Hitron Cable Modem setup in Bridge mode. Modem and router are placed in a corner of the 2nd floor in my house. Despite this, signal strength at every corner of the house is impressive for 802.11n over 5Ghz. However, 2.4Ghz was a bit weak, which was fixed by upping the transmit power to 200.

The router interface is quite impressive: easy to use, yet comprehensive enough to tweak a myriad of settings. Using the Android app "inSSIDer', I was able to figure out which channels had the least traffic via 2.4Ghz. I manually set the router to one of those channels, which stabilized connection and increased speed. My Android devices had a problem auto connecting to 802.11n over 5Ghz. Solution: choose channel 36 or 44 instead of Auto.

One of my favorite features is the ability to connect a USB storage device to the router and access it from anywhere in the world via Wifi or Mobile data. It's not only possible to access the USB storage device, but also any PC connected to the router. It's such an easy setup to do this. The Asus AiCloud app for this router allows USB storage access straight from my Smartphone.

QoS functionality allows me to prioritize network traffic. For example, I've set up Sype with a higher priority over Web downloads. Hence, Skype calls are not degraded when someone else in the house downloads from the Internet at the same time as the call.

This router can also download HTTP, NNTP and Bit Torrents without being connected a PC. Another useful feature is the ability to create a VPN server for remote users.

All in all, this router offers the total package: long range, fast speeds, tons of features and an easy to use interface!
