HASH(0x9ea5bca8) out of 5 stars Spiritually Insightful and Uplifting Dec 14 2013
By Boyd C. Purcell - Published on
Format: Hardcover
In this daily devotional guide, "Abba" is the Aramaic word for "daddy" which is the word Jesus used in addressing God. It is a treasure trove of encouraging spiritual wisdom. Some messages for the day are longer while some are shorter. Here is a good example of one that is short, powerful, and spiritually uplifting: "I have seen your tears and heard your cries. I have walked with you through sorrows that only you and I have known. And satan tells you that I plan humiliation and grief for you? Don't believe a word of it! Tenderly, Abba." I especially recommend this book for Christians who have been indoctrinated since childhood to believe in the unbiblical-illogical doctrine of eternal torture in literal hell fire. Charles Slagle presents a thoroughly Biblical conception of God whose love is truly unconditional and everlasting for every person in the whole world! The message in "Abba Calling" is not God loves you, but....It is God loves you period! For this clear unambiguous truth alone this book merits a 5-star rating.

and "Christianity Without Insanity."

HASH(0x9ea5bcfc) out of 5 stars Personal Notes from our loving Dad Aug. 9 2012
By Bijsmom - Published on
Format: Hardcover
This book is so refreshing. Everyday there is a fresh, personalized note from Abba to encourage, correct and reaffirm His love for us and His ability to handle our stuff. Reading each day's entry is like pouring over a hand written note from my father. Written in down to earth practical language that addresses situations in my life I am reminded that his love is never failing. How much more special when the note is from my Heavenly Father. This book is awesome. I was given a copy to review for Destiny Image, the publisher and I am so happy they sent it my way. On more than one occasion I have found comfort and assurance for my situation. I highly recommend this book.

Abba Calling is a terrific book and a big warm hug or loving push from a concerned and engaged father figure!
You can read day by day, or as I have preferred - you can open the book and pick a reading - which has been an incredible spiritual journey of hope, healing, encouragement and humor each day. A blessing! Worth every penny and MORE!!!

I first heard about the author of this book, Charles Slagle, after reading some of his articles on his website. One in particular, Heavenly Dog, stood out to me, resonating deeply with me, even to the point of weeping.

I knew that Charles was a kindred spirit, having wrestled in many of the same ways that I have wrestled, with fears and doubts about God, and with the same heart longing for a Father's love and understanding and acceptance.
So I contacted him, and over time we became close friends. :)

Though we have yet to meet in person, as I live in Oregon and he lives in Texas, I think of him as an older brother (a much older brother, being twice my age :p), and also as a spiritual mentor.
We talk on the phone often, confiding in one another and praying together. He is a great friend. :)
And I am not the only one, he has a number of people that he connects with and fellowships with, over the phone and otherwise, and has been and is a blessing to many. :)

As Gerry Beauchemin said earlier, Charles is the real thing.
He has struggles, as we all do, but he also has a big heart (as big as Texas ;)), and no doubt hearing from the Father's heart over the years has had a hand in bringing that about. :)

Of course, as a close friend of Charles', I am going to be somewhat biased, but in all honesty even aside from that Abba Calling is a wonderful book, full of encouragement and guidance. Of course, these letters were addressed originally to Charles himself, but much of what you will find in this book is universal in its application, in other words, these letters can speak to others as well.

I haven't read through every entry yet, at least I don't think, but I've read through many, and have been encouraged and inspired often by them.
I read entries (and Charles says this is probably the best way to read them) randomly, or when a day number or page number pops into my mind, or I see numbers written somewhere and those stick in my head, I will look them up, and then see what I find. :)

So, to sum up, I would highly recommend this book, biases or no biases. :)

But a final thought:
Through Charles' encouragement, I have within the last few months begun writing down my own letters from God, and have even branched out and begun writing letters from God to others (even one to Charles as a Christmas gift :))
It's amazing what has come to me, the encouragement, and even more how what I've shared with others has blessed them, to my surprise.
It's an amazing feeling finding that you have been a conduit of God's love to another person. :)

Anyways, my point is that you can do this too, anyone can do this.

Of course, we all see through a glass darkly, and sometimes we may not hear everything right, but I believe that the Father rejoices over our seeking Him out, and longs to speak to us directly, heart to heart, if we would but listen.

To give you an example, I'll share with you one of my own letters:

Cherished Son,

I am here, and I am a father who will never abandon his own, and this includes you.
I know well all of your worries and fears, every struggle, every hurt, every burden on your shoulders... but I am greater than all of these things, my child, and so too are you.
You too are greater than all of these things.
I know it is hard for you to accept your own value, to understand how much you matter to me, but it is true.
You do matter, my son, and so do all people I have made, and have I not made all?
And your worth is not based on appearances or performances, as it often is in this world, but on the fact that you are my own creation, and your worth is founded in my own unfailing love for you, which is greater than you can imagine, and surely greater than any and all of your worries and fears.
Yes, my son, this is a two way street, but I am always here to show you the way to life and the way of love, and I am always your help, even when you, and especially when you, feel helpless, as you often do...
And the future is in my hands, and you can always trust me, and always know that I love you, and I am your hope, and I am your future, and you need not be afraid. Take courage, and rejoice, for I am here, someone who loves and understands you is here.

- yours always, Abba

I hope this speaks to you as well. :) For the women out there you can just substitute son with daughter of course. ;)
But anyways, you can do this too, so don't be afraid to give it a try.

Just quiet yourself, ask God to speak to you, then just write down whatever comes to you. Give it a try. :)

Anyways, buy this book whenever you have the opportunity, cuz it's a good one. :)

May you be richly blessed and may you grow in your understanding of God's unfailing love for you, and may you come to understand His character, His heart, better, the heart of a loving Father.

This is a wonderful book because it has truly captured the heart of God. Yes, these are love notes from our loving Father to His dear son Charles, but you know, God has many children and has no favorites. So, you and I can read these love notes and imagine God speaking to us too.
This little book contains 368 love notes from your heavenly Father to you(for you to confirm in your spirit), one for each day of the year. Each note references one or more passages of Scripture to add more substance to the message of the moment.
This review is not only about "Abba Calling" but the author.
I have been so privileged to have known Charles personally. He is the real thing. There is no man I know who loves Jesus more or who has a greater heart and burden for those who do not yet know our loving God. I simply love Charles and Paula Slagle, two wonderful and awesome people!
About ten years ago now, His book, "Absolute Assurance," greatly assured me that God will never abandon anyone forever-not anyone! I wept as I read it. His book was a stepping stone for me in the eventual writing of my own book on the same theme:Hope Beyond Hell The Righteous Purpose of God's Judgmentand want to say that Charles played a vital role in encouraging me to publish it when still in manuscript form. He saw great potential in it and spurred me on when I really needed it.
Let me give you a small taste of what's in store for you in this little gem of a book - "Abba Calling":
Day 73
Questioning Child,
Roots over-watered will rot. I allow dry seasons to spur your roots to reach deeper into the soil of My love. Thus rooted and grounded, you will stand impervious to life's storms. Yes, I AM quiet much of the time, but you need quietness. And you need the life My Presence brings to you, moment by moment, far more than you need words. Be at peace, and keep trusting! I AM answering your prayers. I love you too much to forsake you.
I pray that you will grow to love God with all your heart as "Abba Calling" becomes part of your daily contact with God!
