I first heard about the author of this book, Charles Slagle, after reading some of his articles on his website. One in particular, Heavenly Dog, stood out to me, resonating deeply with me, even to the point of weeping.
I knew that Charles was a kindred spirit, having wrestled in many of the same ways that I have wrestled, with fears and doubts about God, and with the same heart longing for a Father's love and understanding and acceptance.
So I contacted him, and over time we became close friends. :)
Though we have yet to meet in person, as I live in Oregon and he lives in Texas, I think of him as an older brother (a much older brother, being twice my age :p), and also as a spiritual mentor.
We talk on the phone often, confiding in one another and praying together. He is a great friend. :)
And I am not the only one, he has a number of people that he connects with and fellowships with, over the phone and otherwise, and has been and is a blessing to many. :)
As Gerry Beauchemin said earlier, Charles is the real thing.
He has struggles, as we all do, but he also has a big heart (as big as Texas ;)), and no doubt hearing from the Father's heart over the years has had a hand in bringing that about. :)
Of course, as a close friend of Charles', I am going to be somewhat biased, but in all honesty even aside from that Abba Calling is a wonderful book, full of encouragement and guidance. Of course, these letters were addressed originally to Charles himself, but much of what you will find in this book is universal in its application, in other words, these letters can speak to others as well.
I haven't read through every entry yet, at least I don't think, but I've read through many, and have been encouraged and inspired often by them.
I read entries (and Charles says this is probably the best way to read them) randomly, or when a day number or page number pops into my mind, or I see numbers written somewhere and those stick in my head, I will look them up, and then see what I find. :)
So, to sum up, I would highly recommend this book, biases or no biases. :)
But a final thought:
Through Charles' encouragement, I have within the last few months begun writing down my own letters from God, and have even branched out and begun writing letters from God to others (even one to Charles as a Christmas gift :))
It's amazing what has come to me, the encouragement, and even more how what I've shared with others has blessed them, to my surprise.
It's an amazing feeling finding that you have been a conduit of God's love to another person. :)
Anyways, my point is that you can do this too, anyone can do this.
Of course, we all see through a glass darkly, and sometimes we may not hear everything right, but I believe that the Father rejoices over our seeking Him out, and longs to speak to us directly, heart to heart, if we would but listen.
To give you an example, I'll share with you one of my own letters:
I am here, and I am a father who will never abandon his own, and this includes you.
I know well all of your worries and fears, every struggle, every hurt, every burden on your shoulders... but I am greater than all of these things, my child, and so too are you.
You too are greater than all of these things.
I know it is hard for you to accept your own value, to understand how much you matter to me, but it is true.
You do matter, my son, and so do all people I have made, and have I not made all?
And your worth is not based on appearances or performances, as it often is in this world, but on the fact that you are my own creation, and your worth is founded in my own unfailing love for you, which is greater than you can imagine, and surely greater than any and all of your worries and fears.
Yes, my son, this is a two way street, but I am always here to show you the way to life and the way of love, and I am always your help, even when you, and especially when you, feel helpless, as you often do...
And the future is in my hands, and you can always trust me, and always know that I love you, and I am your hope, and I am your future, and you need not be afraid. Take courage, and rejoice, for I am here, someone who loves and understands you is here.
- yours always, Abba
I hope this speaks to you as well. :) For the women out there you can just substitute son with daughter of course. ;)
But anyways, you can do this too, so don't be afraid to give it a try.
Just quiet yourself, ask God to speak to you, then just write down whatever comes to you. Give it a try. :)
Anyways, buy this book whenever you have the opportunity, cuz it's a good one. :)
May you be richly blessed and may you grow in your understanding of God's unfailing love for you, and may you come to understand His character, His heart, better, the heart of a loving Father.
