An excellent insight into the brain of David Hare, this book is a very honest account of his experiences as both playwright and performer on his most recent piece, Via Dolorosa, which played in London and on Broadway in 1999. Definitely worth a read, and an excellent present for anyone involved in theatre in any way - sure to provoke a response!

HASH(0x9dfb1750) out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read April 3 2016
By caetano-sf - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is an impassioned and also hilarious book by playwright Hare as he attempts acting for the first time in his life, both in London and on Broadway. The man has a great sense of humor. I'll quote one passage, where he's in NYC, and has developed throat problems as a result of his performance schedule:

"The only remedy I haven't tried is Judi Dench's recommendation. She believes in a raw egg swallowed just before bed. But Danny and Karen warned me that you can't eat raw eggs in this country because of the dangers of salmonella. The alternative some people use is semen. Apparently it's just as good as egg. I mean, I'll do anything to become an actor, but don't I have to draw the line somewhere? Just how badly do I want to be a star?"

A very candid and thorough look at his own performance of his own piece. Absorbing and brilliant.
