I'm a fan of Deke's books. His teaching style is thorough, his humour well-timed. This book is aimed at designers, illustrators, and web content creators wanting to pick up the program at their own pace, together with six hours of corresponding video lessons. Lessons can either be watched online or downloaded for repeated watching.

12 chapters cover everything from blends, masks, and gradient mesh, to dynamic effects and printing Illustrator files. Brief text passages in blue fill the chapter, offering tidbits of related information being covered. Well-known in Deke's books are his Pearls of Wisdom, also serving as "useful things to know" in each section.

Deke has written over 80 (!) books on design and computer programs. He's won several industry awards for his software training and (talk about dedication) has either written or filmed a video series for each and every version of Illustrator since its birth in 1987.

HASH(0xa37a7ed0) out of 5 stars Creamy Smooth Presentation by McClelland and Team Nov. 20 2010
By Brett Merkey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
§
I've studied and reviewed [ Adobe Photoshop CS5 One-on-One ] a good armful of McClelland book/video packages and found each impressive. There are other good book/video deals out there and I have a some of those on my shelves. Yet, there are 3 things which make the McClelland offerings stand out:

1) Each chapter's video effectively introduces the subject matter of the chapter. The printed chapter material is complemented, not repeated.

2) McClelland's video presence is flawless. There are no slips, odd speech patterns, swallowed words, verbal solecisms, stutters or throat clearings to distract you from the material. Even when something appears to go wrong during the mousing on the screen, McClelland so smoothly takes advantage that you wonder if you really saw a slip or another deftly choreographed part of the presentation.

3) This book and others in the series are edited in a precise way that makes no assumptions about how your software is configured or your level of knowledge or experience. No steps are skipped and each step is formulated in a way that maximizes your ability to arrive at the next step just as the author intended. Many books of this nature are sloppy in this regard. Presenters might assume that you already had the relevant panel open (just like on their machine!) or of course you knew that you were supposed to hold down the <shift> key *before* you dragged with the mouse...etc. etc. You know how frustrating this can be if you are a beginner.

This material is solid. You won't go wrong if you are serious about learning Illustrator.

HASH(0xa37a7f24) out of 5 stars Deke is The Man. Period. Jan. 30 2011
By goodnplenty - Published on Amazon.com

Ever since I used Adobe Photoshop CS4 one-on-one for one of my Photoshop classes, I've been hooked ever since. Deke is a great teacher and he knows how to break all of the Adobe programs down to their most fundamental parts. He tells which parts of the programs are the most useful and which ones you can disregard. He speaks in a very down-to-Earth fashion, which makes understanding the inner-workings of each program easier. Every time I've ever used his tutorials to learn anything, it has easily taken me to an intermediate-level user.

My one small gripe about his books is that the projects he gives you to work on for each exercise tend to be cheesy-looking. But since this book is intended to teach you techniques and not design skills, that comes with the territory. If you're looking for advanced techniques as well as great artwork, Derek Lea's books are the way to go. But if you're looking simply to understand Illustrator better than you've ever understood it from a guy who knows his stuff, then this is the book for you.

HASH(0xa37ac21c) out of 5 stars The Only One Jan. 18 2011

Deke is the only one I turn to, to keep up on the latest CS series. I have been working in graphic design for a while and found him useful when learning and useful now for expanding my knowledge. Since I work in the print industry I have found Deke's InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop books to be essential. Highly recommended to all levels.

HASH(0xa37ac750) out of 5 stars A Home Run June 2 2011
By J. Hinds - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I borrowed this book from a fellow member of an Adobe User group. After going through this book for a month, I will definitely be getting this, and Deke's other books on CS5. I don't consider myself an expert, but I've been using Illustrator since version 3.2. I was pleased to find out how much I learned from this tome. The downloadable video lessons are great, and I found his descriptions of processes and techniques easy to follow and understand. The book, although not aimed toward the complete newbie, is a great one for taking yourself from an intermediate to an advanced level.
