Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Book Description

Oct. 1 2010
From Captain George Vancouver to Muriel "Curve of Time" Blanchet to Jim "Spilsbury's Coast" Spilsbury, visitors to Desolation Sound have left behind a trail of books endowing the area with a romantic aura that helps to make it British Columbia's most popular marine park. In this hilarious and captivating book, CBC personality Grant Lawrence adds a whole new chapter to the saga of this storied piece of BC coastline.

Young Grant's father bought a piece of land next to the park in the 1970s, just in time to encounter the gun-toting cougar lady, left-over hippies, outlaw bikers and an assortment of other characters. In those years Desolation Sound was a place where going to the neighbours' potluck meant being met with hugs from portly naked hippies and where Russell the Hermit's school of life (boating, fishing, and rock 'n' roll) was Grant's personal Enlightenment--an influence that would take him away from the coast to a life of music and journalism and eventually back again.

With rock band buddies and a few cases of beer in tow, an older, cooler Grant returns to regale us with tales of "going bush," the tempting dilemma of finding an unguarded grow-op, and his awkward struggle to convince a couple of visiting kayakers that he's a legit CBC radio host while sporting a wild beard and body wounds and gesticulating with a machete. With plenty of laugh-out-loud humour and inspired reverence, Adventures in Solitude delights us with the unique history of a place and the growth of a young man amidst the magic of Desolation Sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adventures in great story telling Oct. 22 2010
it is a phenomenal book. It is hilarious, informative, and pretty spot on portrait of what makes Canada so unique: the landscape and the people who give it life. Grant is a brilliant story teller with a flair for giving stories the right kind of exaggeration where it makes sense all while threading his uncanny knack for researching the history of the topic.

And to give you an idea of how good the book is, I started on the Friday of the Thanksgiving long weekend and was done the book by Monday at lunch. All 200 plus pages of it! I never do that with books!

I strongly suggest if you like the outdoors, cottaging, and all things Canadiana to get a copy of this book!

I started reading this book at Pender Harbour which is where my family went every summer. When the author was talking about "racing" to catch the ferry and getting seasick on the Sunshine Coast highway it seemed like he was talking about my own childhood.

I went boating with my family to Desolation Sound many summers during my childhood, but I didn't know half of the information about the history of the place.

When we went boating this summer, we where chatting about many of the locations that the author talks about. It was fascinating to find remnants of an old homestead that we didn't even know about. We even found one of the huge walnut trees next to an old outhouse. It was fascinating.

Thankfully, I was too young to know much about the Lund Pub, but we really enjoy Nancy's Bakery these days.

The in-depth accounts of the psychological effects that happened to people who tried to live "off the grid" are really good too. People often have very "romantic" notions about living "off the grid" or "exiting civilization" and I think the chapters about people who did that and then slowly went "nuts" as a result is a good reality check. Entertaining, well written and enormously hillarious. As a resident of the Sunshine Coast and former active boater and fisher on the waters from Langdale to Lund I could relate to a lot of the stories about fishing, unique and interesting people and of course weather! Even if you haven't experienced anything of this writer's life you will enjoy learning about Desolation Sound and its history. Buying this book is a great way to spend your time and your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Storyteller Oct. 22 2010
I read this book over Thanksgiving weekend and I couldn't put it down. Grant is a great storyteller, mixing in lots of history about Desolation Sound along with his own memories and stories of growing up with it as his vacation spot. He hits home with stories of vomit filled embarrassing car rides that we probably all remember from our youth. I knew he was a good storyteller on air (CBC Radio 3), and I was thrilled to see how well his story telling powers translated to a full length book.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great vacation read! June 23 2011

I picked up this book while on a BC Ferry heading for a weekend trip in Tofino, BC. I read the jacket and I was hooked. I sat out on Chesterman Beach with a cup of tea and my book and was sucked into Grant's stories of visiting Desolation Sound, I couldn't put it down. I finished the book on my trip and since have been telling all my friends. Grant is a great writer and storyteller and he was able to bring Desolation Sound alive in my imagination for 3 wonderful days. Highly recommend.

I've never been to Desolation Sound, BC, despite having lived in Vancouver all my life. Grant's stories about this special area of British Columbia truly bring it to life. Adventures in Solitude is a very personal account from someone who has been travelling there for years. It will have you laughing out loud while learning much about the area's history.
