The writer's humor of his experience on this small South Pacific island is a real treat. The island jumping in a small, local plane, the roaches taking up residence with him, his description of the rain and island lifestyle, and, well, there is much more. You'll enjoy the pictures and wish you were there. Oh, and there was the story of the betel-nut chewing, but I don't want to write about that. After reading the book, I asked a business acquaintance of mine if she had heard of Yap. She said yes. I was so surprised and amazed, I bought her lunch.

This little book, written for an American audience, accurately and humorously describes many details of life on Yap, the outer islands, and the transportation in between. I heard myself laughing out loud over some of the characters and situations. I wanted to read much more, the pages turned too fast, it was too short.

HASH(0xa48baa98) out of 5 stars A Great Little Book! June 13 2009
By W. Douglas Mcdowell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
While I have traveled to the Far East many times, I have often dreamed of a journey to a South Pacific island paradise (you know, just like in the movies). Unfortunately, I was never afforded the opportunity. Being a ham radio operator, I had at least heard of YAP since I had talked to other hams in Micronesia. When I ran across "Adventures in YAP" I just had to read it! Clyman Otis, an Indiana Jones look alike (see the back cover), writes in a way that brings the whole adventure to life. I found that once I started reading the book I couldn't put it down. Here is a guy dumped in the middle of a `South Pacific Paradise' with the same expectations I would have had and finds that things are not always as they seem to the outsider. The humorous nature of the book makes it easy, enjoyable and exciting reading. It certainly gave me a new perspective of life in a `South Pacific paradise'. Great Book (I've read it twice) and I am looking forward to reading about some of Clyman Otis's other travel adventures soon.

HASH(0xa336b060) out of 5 stars "Adventures" in Paradise May 21 2001
By Yogagirl - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
While many people have travelled to islands in the South Pacific, Clyman Otis has given us a window to a very different look at paradise. Living and working for several years on the remote island of Yap, Clyman somehow manages to keep his sense of humor through all the difficulties of culture shock, Pizza Hut withdrawal and learning to live and work with the Micronesians. It would be nice to hear more from Clyman. Perhaps further adventures, or what lasting impressions his time in Micronesia left on him. Fun to read, "Adventures in Yap" will alter your image of an island paradise.

HASH(0xb7a7b024) out of 5 stars Unusual Place, Unusual Man April 11 2001
By David Hayes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
In the past 20 years my wife and I have visted a lot of different places around the world and have lived in some of them for many years. Its easy to write home about Paris, London, Hong Kong, etc. but its difficult to put into words the essence of a people. Mr. Otis has accomplished that feat in his book that describes in words and photographs his time in the Caroline Islands on the Micronesian island of Yap. Anyone who has traveled and/or lived overseas must add this wonderful book to their collection

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can recommend it to anyone with an interest in what life is like in the more remote areas of our worl.

HASH(0xa82980fc) out of 5 stars Clyman Otis in Yap March 13 2011
By Paul S. Jackson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
This is a absolutely delightful book. The author has a sense of humor that pulled the guffaws out of me many times in the reading of Adventures in Yap. A must read for any person who has ever traveled the Pacific or was ever curious about Island Life. While reading this book I felt as though I was in a conversation with Mr. Otis. Hilarious, raucous, funny and believable.
