I don't know if I have the newer version or older. I've never had one with writing on the outside like this one. I replace them every 1-1.5 years because the chamber gets mottled and the seal is destroyed with time and it's been my go to coffee maker for about 4 years now. I was hoping maybe this one would be improved, we'll see! It makes the best, most smooth coffee I've ever had (outside of a cafe). For the cost and ease of use, you can't beat it. Just be prepared to replace it fairly often. I've even bought them for gifts and everyone loves them!

I've had one of these for about six months now. It sits on top of my $800 espresso machine, and gets used every single day (which is more than I can say for my espresso machine).

You'll use about twice as much ground coffee as you're used to for either espresso or drip, but you won't care. The quality of the coffee it produces really is that good. It's smooth, full and rich, but almost entirely without bitterness.

The secret, as far as I can tell, is that by using a very fine grind (same as for an espresso machine) and only soaking the grounds for 30 seconds, you pull out all the 'good stuff' before the bitter parts of the coffee get as chance to dissolve. Personally, I like a touch of bitterness in my coffee, so i'll sometimes wait up to a minute to push the water through. You can experiment until you find the best brew for you.

The instructions recommend filling with about two ounces of water, then plunging that through and topping up your cup with hot water. Personally, I fill the cylinder up to the top with hot (not quite boiling) water, and push the whole lot through. I think it tastes better that way, but mostly it's just one less step.

There won't be crema. If you're an espresso geek like me you might have a hard time with that - at first. I stopped caring pretty quickly.

Use fresh ground coffee. You really get the most out of the grounds, so the difference between fresh ground and pre-ground is more noticeable than if you'd used a traditional method.

Another tip: the filters last forever! Ok, that's an exaggeration, but not by much. Feeling experimental, I decided to keep washing and reusing the same filters over and over.

Love it. I make my coffee everyday with this device and it always comes out terrific. Yes, it takes a little bit longer to make several cups of coffee as compared to some of the alternatives, however the consistency of flavor and smoothness never fails to impress me with the Aeropress. I recommend it to all my friends.

Kinda disappointed. Sure it makes really smooth coffee, but the finish is just nonexistent. It just tastes weak. It is fast and convienent. (However getting the water to the right temp takes some finagling). I feel like you could make the same coffee by just using a 1 min French press. Very quick easy to clean- which is nice. It makes a VERY small amount. So if you want to make individual lattes, it would be perfect. Otherwise- you always have to make an Americano if you want a cup of coffee. The "espresso" shot it pulls is not an espresso shot. . . It is very concentrated coffee. It does not have the same velvety creamy ness that a professionally pulled espresso shot has.

Having gotten real tired of various drip coffee makers, I decided to make the purchase thinking that drinking less coffee due to more involvement in making it would be a good idea. WRONG!!! I'm drinking more coffee now and, using the "Hario MSS-1B Mini Mill Slim Coffee Grinder" I think I've come close to a taste only available in heaven. Hand-grinding with the Hario allows a much finer grind than I can get with your average electronic coffee mill, and I actually enjoy the exercise and the reward is truly amazing. One does well to read the instructions and I now use water temp of around 180 Fahrenheit, 82 celsius. I've yet to try some of the suggestions in the little manual. I've found the perfect mug for one fat scoop of extremely fine grind fresh Kicking Horse "kick-ass" or "chocolate" dark beans. For blind folks like myself, there are variations which will work quite well since blind folks cannot see the fill marks on the outer sleeve. Plastic microwave proof measuring cups of appropriate sizes and a talking cooking thermometer allows learning timings for various amounts of water to reach the desired temperature, eg maybe 30 seconds for 1/2 cup to reach 175 degrees. At present, I use my trusty $8.00 kettle and my talking cooking thermometer. I found a PDF version of the manual which allowed my speech-based OCR to read the product info for me. I'll be in touch with the manufacturer to see if the might not place a text version of the manual on their web site since the technology I use is not available nor owned by many blind folks. Gotta go now to grind my supper coffee!

May 17 2014: Just received a replacement sleeve from Aerobie; I had written to them about 3 weeks ago concerning an abrasion on the inner surface of the sleeve which they called crazing.
