5.0 out of 5 stars ‘Scrum helps teams deliver products in short cycles, enabling speedy feedback, change, and improvement.’ July 6 2016
By Grady Harp - Published on Amazon.com

Author Scott M. Graffius is the founder and is president of Exceptional PPM and PMO Solutions, a consultancy specialized in project, program, portfolio, and PMO management inclusive of Agile, traditional, and hybrid frameworks. His passion is to help companies achieve significant business results, such as strategically aligned initiatives, reduced cycle time, upgraded on-time delivery, improved on-budget delivery, higher satisfaction, and greater competitive advantage. He holds the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) credential from the Scrum Alliance, the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute, and ITIL certification from Axelos. Before that, he worked in organizations with businesses ranging from advanced technology products and services to business services, retail, e-commerce, manufacturing, and entertainment. He has experience with consumer, business, reseller, government, and international customer markets, as well as international experience spanning 20 countries.

For those who are unfamiliar with the term ‘Agile Scrum’, the following is offered: ‘Scrum is an Agile framework and, as such, is consistent with the values of the Agile Manifesto. Individuals and interactions over processes and tools Scrum is a team-based approach to delivering value to the business. Team members work together to achieve a shared business goal. The Scrum framework promotes effective interaction between team members so the team delivers value to the business. Once the team gets a business goal, it figures out how to do the work, does the work, identifies what's getting in its way, takes responsibility to resolve all the difficulties within its scope, and works with other parts of the organization to resolve concerns outside their control.’ Or better defined by Scott, ‘Scrum encompasses a powerful set of principles and practices that help teams deliver products in short cycles, which enables speedy feedback, rapid adaptation to change, and continuous improvement.’

The manner in which Scott presents this material is exemplary: even those who have negligible experience in the new field of online marketing can easily follow his well-designed graphs and explanatory images. He explains the Agile Scrum Cycle by starting with Vision and moving on through product roadmap and release plan, team formation, product release backlog, sprint planning, sprint execution sprint review, sprint retrospective and product release.

Even if Agile Scrum is new to the reader, this book makes it seem easy to learn – and that is Scott M. Graffius’ greatest gift! Grady Harp, May 16

5.0 out of 5 stars it's an agile methodology to manage team (and even individual) projects better and focus on pushing out quality products in time July 31 2016
By Simón Gómez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
As someone who had worked extensively with the Scrum methodology before diving into this book, I still found it really interesting and helpful. It's a quick start guide, sure, but it perfectly explains the hows and whys of all the basics of Scrum.

If you don't know what Scrum is, it's an agile methodology to manage team (and even individual) projects better and focus on pushing out quality products in time, based in sprints and having a well organized backlog of pending tasks. The book does a great job explaining everything in detail, and if you're looking to get into agile, I cannot recommend any other book better.

Something that stands out of the book by Scott M. Graffius is that it doesn't focus only on software developement, the most popular use of Scrum, but makes it more general.

All in all a really good read and a great starting point for improving your product making methodology. Worth the read equally for project managers, developers, and beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much to like, in its minimalist way June 27 2016
By GF in IL - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is subtitled "Your Quick Start Guide" and that is exactly correct.

As I teach project management, Mr. Graffius approached me and asked if I would be willing to read his book and write a review. I was happy to agree since I hoped that the content could be helpful in teaching my PM class. When I opened it, the first thing that caught my eye about this book was how well the message was designed. The pages use white space elegantly, the graphics support the text, and the text is clearly written. That alone is worth 4 stars! For a novice who isn't familiar with these concepts, this style makes it very easy to follow.

Each section includes the purpose, who is involved, when you complete it, how long it takes, and steps of how to complete it. This at-a-glance styles makes it extremely easy to understand and follow. The potential downside is that it doesn't provide a lot of extra detail; for some people this would be a plus, for others not. If you buy it knowing that its purpose is as a quick start guide, I'd think you'd be very happy. I tend to like a bit of a deeper dive in addition, but would absolutely want this on my desk as either a reference guide if I were experienced or to provide the steps without all the extra info if I were a novice. The glossary is excellent for the novice or for the expert to use to teach others, the steps excellent to learn from or to use as a check or review, and the appendices offer additional information to round out the minimalist steps. Lastly, I liked that this wasn't geared only to IT as many Agile Scrum books are.

Mr. Graffius repeats the main graphic throughout so you always can see where you are in the cycle. I'd have liked that to have delineated the "you are here" in the process for each step. I'd also have liked, upfront, a very short description of the roles, responsibilities and main terms. I realize the glossary is there, but some basics to set the stage would have been nice for me. I also missed having an index - I have several books that do not have one and each time I use them I wish that they had one. And, last, as noted by another reviewer, this doesn't cover testing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good explanation for Agile May 5 2016

Excellent book. Well written with colorful diagrams which makes understanding the concepts much easier. Agile is a different methodology than waterfall model and there are lot of paradigm shifting concepts. The author has written in an excellent way makes learning a pleasure. I have done both agile and waterfall and they have their own advantages and disadvantages. Lot if practical examples are given in he book too. Very nice to read in a Kindle for PC or tablet. I was provided a review copy in exchange of a review.
