“Essentrics helped bring me back into the game after near retirement. My body was unable to function, injured and in constant pain. After the first session with Miranda I felt the pain disappearing. I really believe that this program has something in it for everyone; whether you’re looking to relieve pain, improve your sport or change your body, Essentrics is it.”
—Jonathon Power, former world squash champion
“I was in constant pain from arthritis and had difficulty moving…. After finding Miranda and beginning Essentrics, I became flexible and able to move freely without pain.”
—Kimberley Dahme, of the rock band Boston
“Miranda explores a large variety of physiological mechanisms that will help contribute to maintaining a youthful body as we inevitably enter into later stages of life. Her fundamental preaching is correct.”
—Claudio Cuello, MD, D.Sc., FRSC, OC, professor and former chair of the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Department, McGill University
From the Back Cover
"Every day, we have a very clear choice: We can grow older or we can grow younger."
In recent years the field of aging research has exploded with new clinical findings. Many widely accepted ideas about aging—including those about the inevitability of our declining metabolism, our dying brain cells, and our deteriorating muscles and bones—have been debunked. Today we know that the physical signs of aging are far more a product of lifestyle choices than of calendar years. Aging Backwards offers an exciting and comprehensive plan for actively slowing down and even reversing the aging process through gentle exercise that develops strong, flexible muscles.
Why focus on strengthening muscles? Because as Miranda Esmonde-White, PBS fitness personality and creator of the Essentrics technique, explains, our muscle cells are the keys to our longevity. The powerhouses of our cells, the mitochondria, keep us looking and feeling young—and muscle cells contain more mitochondria than any other part of our body. If we can keep our mitochondrian fires burning, our muscles—not to mention our bones, hearts, lungs, and skin—can all experience the vitality of youth. And the best news of all is that it takes just thirty minutes a day of gentle exercise to keep muscles strong.
With eight basic age-reversing workouts that build core strength, lengthen and tone muscle, increase flexibility, and speed weight loss, Aging Backwards offers the information and tools to live longer, healthier, and happier lives.--This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition. I find it easier to exercise to a DVD rather than a book, so must admit that I only read the exercises in the book, but did not practice from it. On the strength of her reasoning and obvious experience in the book, I bought a series of DVD's from her site and have been practicing for 3 weeks. Great overall fitness and flexibility improvement ! And she is right; while you are improving your overall strength and flexibility, the particular pains start to resolve because you deal with the whole muscle and nerve chain rather than the site of pain. I can't believe the improvement in my thighs and butt -typically the areas that you give up on as you age. She is a positve and easy to understand DVD instructor and continues while she is leading the exercises, to give good explanations for what she is doing.
I challenge anyone to do her plie hip and quad exercises and not feel the burn. She also focuses on feet (dance background) - our very foundation - which few of my other exercise books pay much attention to .Read more ›
I just recently found out about this stretching program and I am intrigued by all that it claims to help with. The reviews of this book and related DVDs are impressive and inspiring too. I haven't had a chance to give a go yet, but I certainly plan to.
I have been an avid yoga fan for many years (I like Larry Payne's dvds in particular) and that certainly has helped with overall stretching. But from what I've read so far about Essentrics, this program takes stretching to a whole new level. I am always open to trying new health-related programs and products, if they seem credible and well-thought out. I think this one does.
I am planning to explore the dvds for this program, before I begin actually trying it. The photos and instructions in this kindle book ARE good but I always prefer dvds, when it comes to any exercise regime. I think it's so much easier, especially when starting with a new program.
