HASH(0x9c545690) out of 5 stars disappointing DVD quality Jan. 13 2007
By Gian Paolo Nardoianni - Published on
Format: DVD
The copy I bought (new, sealed) is a poor quality black and white film.
Not only the documentary (which is a real masterwork by Erica Anderson and portrays one of the greatest men who ever lived) has not been restored at all, but the original footage has also been very heavily cut: and this is the most disappointing thing of all. I remember watching the real thing, and there was a sequence featuring Schweitzer sitting on the Kanzerein and contemplating the valley below, the wind playing with his white hair: a very moving scene indeed, but there's no trace of it on this DVD.
I hope some other reliable firm will some day publish the whole of the film, in color and really restored.

HASH(0x9c5456e4) out of 5 stars Albert Schweitzer revisited July 26 2006

I found the Albert Schweitzer DVD to offer an extraordinary visit with a man who was truly one of our most recent saints. Schweitzer was an amazing man, a doctor, a musician and a spiritual giant. The restored footage gave me the feeling I was there visiting Lambarene and spending a few days with him at his hospital. I could almost feel his love for his patients, and for all creatures. I plan to watch this DVD over and over again it is so inspiring.

HASH(0x9c5459c0) out of 5 stars Is this the original 1957 film? April 7 2009
By Dan B. - Published on

This DVD advertises itself as the "Academy Award Winner Best Documentary 1957," "first time on DVD," "restored and uncut." But I question these assertions. According to the 1957 New York Times review, the film was in color, yet this DVD is black-and-white. The DVD version also contains many imperfections, so I doubt that it's "restored." Therefore,I must wonder if this DVD even contains the full original film. Nevertheless, even this version of the film is still worth seeing just to witness the great humanitarian Albert Schweitzer working in his hospital and playing the organ.

This DVD is for Schweitzer fans. Amazing old photos with a storyline to explain some of his early work in Africa.
HASH(0x9c545aa4) out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Documentary Nov. 13 2015

This is an amazing documentary, one which has given me great inspiration and guidance for this period of my life, helping me answer the question, What should I do now? Albert Schweitzer's life had so many distinct chapters, each chapter providing a solid foundation for each succeeding chapter. Those who produced this documentary showcase Albert Schweitzer's passion to make a positive difference in the lives of others and the thoughtful planning and disciplined effort he engaged in, with the help of many others, decade after decade, to fulfill his mission. I would recommend that anyone who wants to live a life of purpose watch this . . . It was life changing and is helping me prioritize and focus.
