Review

"All the Voices Cry has to be counted one of the most assured short story debuts in recent years."—goodreports.net

"Alice Petersen writes as eloquently about the natural world as she does about the world of human emotion and desire. This is a wise and impressive collection of stories."—David Bezmozgis, author of The Free World

"Alice Petersen's All the Voices Cry is masterful and potent—incredibly satisfying for a reader."—Kathleen Winter, author of Annabel

"The story is balanced between this sense of nostalgia and acceptance, and sustained by the narrator's charming voice and her gift for physical description."—David Bezmozgis, on "After Summer"

"These stories are lively, immediate ... the metaphorical eye and the ear for voice are strong here."—David Adams Richards Prize, Winner's Citation (2009)

From the Back Cover

Set in the woods and rural areas outside Montréal, New Zealander Alice Peterson's stories sparkle with down-under merriment and Québecois charm. Her themes are simple--love, family, death--but rendered so precisely that their inner complexities shine clear, and their most improbable beauties emerge. All the Voices Cry is a romantic and whimsical debut from a not-to-be-missed young author.

All the Voices Cry

This is one beautifully perceptive book that I wanted never to end. The subtle way of encompassing so many familiar thoughts and experiences of our days with subsequential surprising outcomes at times, plus situations that emphasise all things familiar , the little darts of shade and light , the wonderful sense of humour, an underlying theme of acceptance and courage in the face of the unpredictability of life, is a whole body/ whole mind experience. I find the stories to make one feel alive, delicious little episodes that remind us of our own experiences that are not quite the same in content, but with which we share the same range of human response, and this makes Alice Petersen's book very, very endearing.

I have no choice but to begin re-reading it, for coming to the end is somehow, not an option. Please continue your fine writings, Ms. Petersen. I heartily recommend this book for the most refreshing and uplifting read. For Quebecers, scenes of the familiar forests and lands away from the cities add yet another dimension that enhances the fine writings. Bravo to the author!

The initial impression is one of a quiet and thoughtful solitude -- descriptions of the Quebec countryside are woven into a vivid visual impression of cottage life at the lake. But ultimately you find yourself entangled deeper and deeper into the subtle drama of the relationships. It's really remarkable that stories so short, can create such lasting memories for these complex characters. It's hard for me to describe these stories to someone else, without tears coming to my eyes. It's not that the characters or their situations are necessarily sad -- it's that they are so real, so tangible.
