From Publishers Weekly

For 300-some pages, Gardner (The Perfect Husband) keeps readers spellbound—not just by her plot but by the beautifully realized character of Massachusetts police sniper Bobby Dodge. He meets his match in Catherine Gagnon, who as a girl was snatched, raped and nearly murdered. Now she's the wife of erratic, rich Jimmy Gagnon and mother of perpetually ill four-year-old Nathan. When Bobby kills Jimmy during a hostage situation at the Gagnons, he does it to save Catherine and Nathan. But was it a righteous shoot, or did Catherine engineer the killing? Judge James Gagnon and his wife, Maryanne, think Bobby murdered their son out of lust for Catherine. As other people start dying, very messily, and the DA and cops come down hard on Bobby, Gardner keeps the tension high and the pace fast. But resolution comes in what may be the clunkiest chase crafted by a pro this year: "Bobby processed everything at once. Three open doorways, three bedrooms. He ran by the first, then the second, and came sprinting into the third just in time to see Maryanne staggering back." Ten pages later, so many characters have run into so many rooms, it's amazing that the right person finally gets his head blown off by the right avenger. But Garner then ends with a neat postlude offering one more twist; her fans will feel requited.

From Booklist

It was bad enough that Catherine Gagnon survived a horrible childhood abduction where for a month she lived in a cave and was the plaything for her sicko abductor. But now, 25 years later, she faces tragedy again as she fights to keep her son, Nathan. One chilly November night, a police sniper kills her husband, Jimmy, in response to her 911 call claiming he was about to hurt Nathan. Jimmy's death means that his parents, an influential judge and his blue-blooded wife, are more determined than ever to take Nathan from Catherine, whom they see as unfit to mother their only grandchild. True, the birth of Nathan mentally paralyzed Catherine, who could not get past the memories of her abduction and her emotionally absent parents. But is she really the monster the Gagnons and their PI make her out to be? Massachusetts state police special-ops officer Bobby Dodge, the sniper who took out Jimmy, doesn't think so, and unwittingly falls under the spell of the manipulative widow. A twisted, effective psychological thriller. Mary Frances Wilkens

This is a new author for me, and it is also a book that is first in a series.

I had initially planned to give this one 3.5 stars. For me, the beginning of the book read too much like a police tactical how-to manual...way too much detail and my attention span was beginning to wane. But the action-packed ending upped my rating to 3.75. There are some disturbing issues in the book, so be forewarned.

The narrator, Anna Fields, did a good job.

I plan to read more of this series.

MY RATING: 3.75 stars!

Enjoyed This Psychological Crime Thriller, May 12, 2013
By James A. Anderson "Author" (London, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Alone (D. D. Warren) (Kindle Edition)
An excellent crime thriller by a very good writer.

This is my first Lisa Gardner novel, but won't be my last. I rather enjoyed this psychological crime thriller with its many twists and turns and a cast of highly interesting characters. A real page turner that kept me reading to find out how it ends.

Bobby Dodge is a Boston SWAT team sniper who shoots and kills a husband holding his wife and son hostage with a gun. But is everything as it seems? Was Bobby manipulated by the wife, Catharine, into killing her abusive husband? His actions face police investigation. She was kidnapped and sexually abused as a child and to complicate matters, her abductor is out on parole and after her and her child, hired by Benefacor X.

Here's where the novel fails a bit because Benefactor X is so obvious you know the culprit almost from the start and Gardner's suspense is lacking here. The end however is very exciting and offers a few surprises.

The book is listed as a D.D. Warren mystery. She is a Boston female detective but is only a secondary character. Bobby Dodge plays a much more prominent part in this novel. I would have liked to have seen D.D. Warren play a larger role in the story. I think she was underused and underplayed by the author.

It is for the above reasons I have given this book 4 stars instead of 5.

Still, overall it was a very good and exciting read and I'd read others by this author.

Reason for Reading: I am reading this series but started with book #3, since my sister had the first book it was the perfect opportunity to catch up with the series.

Having read books 3-5 of this series it was a little strange going back to the first book as D.D. Warren is only a very minor character who is only introduced halfway through the book. Obviously, this book did not start out to be the "D.D. Warren" series. Instead the main character is Bobby Dodge, police sniper, who in the later books is D.D.'s partner. Bobby is called out to an intense domestic scene where shots fired have been reported and he makes his first on the job kill. The woman whose life he has saved turns out to be not only a woman in trouble but trouble herself. Bobby is investigated by Internal Affairs to see if his shot was righteous but the dead man's affluent parents file a civil suit against him for murder. While they also file against the widow for custody of the one grandchild whom they've accused of being mistreated by his mother. Bobby gets wrapped up in the widow's life and finds himself embroiled in the middle of a complicated case where people close to the widow start to be violently killed off, one after another.

A very intricate plot with plenty of different angles from which to switch back and forth. The character of Bobby is given a complete background and since having read other books in the series it was interesting to get to know him so much better. A compelling story that deals with multiple themes: police procedural, SWAT teams, serial killer, child kidnapping and murder for hire. All these rolled into one make for an entertaining, detailed plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It was quite strange to find D.D.

Alone is an amazing crime story. It all began with the death of Jimmy Gagnon, son of Judge Gagnon. Jimmy was killed by State trooper Bobby Dodge who with a tactical swat team was trying to defuse a supposedly domestic abuse hostage crisis. But the judge and his wife believe Jimmy's wife, Catharine Gagnon engineered the crisis to get rid of their son, so they want their only grandson taken from her. They start by suing Bobby Dodge and with that unfolded incidences which invokes Catherine's past as a victim of a pedophile half a century back.

Embroiled in the mystery of the unfolding drama is the lurking presence of the serial rapist, manipulation by the late Jimmy's parents, the helplessness of the grandson, Catherine's calculating nature and Bobby Dodge's determination to resolve the mysteries behind all the deaths around. Alone, Triple Agent Double Cross, Runaway are gripping until the very end. I like books that thrill me until the last pages.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
When veteran officer Bobby Dodge of the Massachusetts State Police Special Tactics and Operations Team is called out to a hostage situation in progress, little does he know that in a matter of moments his life would change. Seeing a woman with a young child in her arms held at gunpoint, he keeps the gunman in his sight of his scope from fifty yards away, but when the gunman rips the child from the woman's arms and points the gun directly at the woman's head, his finger tightening on the trigger, State Trooper Bobby Dodge does what he was trained to do.

It is that split second action that will raise questions that remain unanswerable until Bobby puts on his thinking cap in a very unorthodox way. Moreover, the beautiful damsel in distress, Catherine Rose Gagnon, has a lot of issues, including a secret past that continues to haunt her. Her child also has issues, but what they are will keep the reader guessing until the shocking finale. Once again, this author has created another intense thriller. Full of surprises and suspense, this fast-paced, intricately plotted book will keep the reader turning its pages.
