Having Writing Errors or Can't Burn the DVDs?

Most writing errors are likely caused by older or out-of-date firmware on DVD burners. For optimum performance, we recommend that you check your DVD burner and update the firmware if needed:

Users with Stand-alone DVD burners

Users with Laptop and PC

  • If your system is less than four years old, you likely have a compatible writer and firmware. (If you cannot write to the blank media, ensure that you have a DVD writer and not a disc reader.)
  • If your system is more than four years old, update your firmware from the PC/Laptop manufacturer's website.

DVD+R: Quality Media Storage

DVD+R is a Write-Once format, which means you can read the files many times, but you cannot record over them or edit them. This format is ideal for sharing videos, organizing your media library, or archiving important business or personal data. Made of durable materials, these DVD+Rs provide a permanent lifetime storage for all those files you want to save. DVD+Rs are compatible with most standard DVD readers, which means that after you burn your favorite videos to a DVD+R, you can play them back on most DVD players. With 4.7 GB of space on each disc, you can store up to two hours of standard video.

16X Write Speed: Quick and Convenient

AmazonBasics DVD+Rs enable fast write speeds up to 16X (burn speed will fluctuate) for quick, clean data transfer. To take full advantage of these speeds, your DVD burner must burn at speeds of at least 16X. Consult your computer or DVD burner product manual for this information. At 16X, transfer speed translates to 21.60 MB/s, which means that you can burn a full disk in less than four minutes. The organic dye used on the write side of these DVD+Rs provides stable writing at high speeds for reliable, accurate finished disks. Quality construction minimizes errors and improves performance.

DVD-R vs. DVD+R

There are two types of recordable DVD disks available. Almost all recent DVD players and drives can handle both burned DVD-R and DVD+R disks, but some older players can only read one format or the other. It is important to check your player's manual to determine which DVD type it supports.

Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging

This AmazonBasics product features Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging that is recyclable. It comes without excess packaging materials such as hard plastic clamshell casings, plastic bindings, or wire ties. The packaging is designed to be opened without the use of a box cutter or knife, and it will protect your product just as well as traditional packaging. Products with Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging can frequently be shipped in their own boxes, without an additional shipping box, saving on resources and reducing waste.

HASH(0xa2c60af8) out of 5 stars Dependable 4X Nov. 13 2009
By Ronny Ong - Published on Amazon.com
Style Name: DVD+RSize: 4.7 GB Verified Purchase
I have had 100% success burning both data and video formats with this media at 4X using:
Sony Optiarc AD-7170A (firmware version 1.O4 supports this media at 4X, 6X, 8X, 12X, 16X)
Plextor PX-708A (firmware 1.11 supports this media at 2.4X, 4X, 8X)
LG GSA-T11N (firmware A104 supports this media at 4X only but can do 8X with other comparable media)
NEC ND-3500AG (firmware 2.TB supports this media at 2.4X, 4X but can do 8X with other comparable media)

As you can see, some of my older drives won't support faster than 4X with this media. I'm a little surprised that my oldest (the Plextor) would support 8X, but I haven't bothered to try anything faster than 4X on any drive because I'm rarely in that much of a hurry.

My burns are generally more than 90% of disc capacity so I am almost always using most of the recordable surface. My success criteria is not just an error-free burn; I have verified several discs by reading them at max speed (on a different drive than the burner) and comparing against the original source.

For me, these are a great value. For people who prefer wider 8X and 16X compatibility, these are probably not a good choice.

HASH(0xa2c60d14) out of 5 stars Excellent Value! Oct. 13 2009

NOTE (August 2012): If you got to this review while browsing reviews on other media (Amazon CDs, for example), this review is on the DVD+R product. For some reason, some DVD reviews show up under CD products as well.

Now, onto the review! There isn't a whole lot you can say about a particular brand of DVD+R media. If it works and there are no unusual issues, one is pretty much the same as another.

That said, there are two things that will keep me buying the AmazonBasics DVDs. One is the price....the price is lower than other brands, and still a similar price even when the other brands are on sale. Factor in Amazon free shipping and sales tax considerations and their price is excellent.

The other reason I like these is the shipping. The double boxing and packing ensured the media got to me safely.

As far as performance, that is driven mostly by your PC hardware and burner. I have used about 80 of these in the past year or two to store general data, photos, video, etc. and have not had any issues. I have used some other brands (Sony) where I have run into an occasional bad DVD right out of the box.

I would rate the Amazon Basic DVDs right up there with the Panasonic media, which from my experience tends to have no bad DVDs in a batch.

Try these, you won't be disappointed!

HASH(0xa2c61648) out of 5 stars No problems. Decent price. Decent quality Oct. 18 2009

I have nothing bad to say about these discs. I've burned plenty of videos to watch on my particularly finicky Sony DVD player and they have played just fine. In addition the $25 Samsung dual-layer burner I got from NewEgg has had no problem burning these at full 16x speed.

ImgBurn reports these as UME02 discs.

Other than that, these discs also include a protective coating on the label side of the disc to protect the foil. So you don't have to expect any of the foil chipping off like you do on some of the really cheap discs.

There's really not much else to say. The price is right. They work well and they're fairly durable.

HASH(0xa2c615d0) out of 5 stars Fool me once... Oct. 24 2011
By J. Alec West - Published on Amazon.com
Style Name: DVD-RSize: 4.7 GB Verified Purchase
The old Scottish proverb goes, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." I guess the shame is on me, then. This is the second cakebox of AmazonBasics 16x discs I've bought. The first batch had no "bad" discs in it as far as I could tell. But for some reason, I could only get my burner to recognize them as 4x. And no, it wasn't my equipment. I use Maxell, Verbatim, and Taiyo Yuden DVDs most of the time and decided to experiment with these. And only the AmazonBasics DVD-R blanks defaulted to 4x. Sadly, I thought this was just a fluke and decided to order a second cakebox.

The second cakebox is worse than the first. Again, they default to a 4x burn. But this time, out of the first 25 discs, 4 were coasters (bad discs). All I can say is that I won't be fooled a third time. The more familiar name brands may cost more. But, when a disc is supposed to be 16x, that's what I expect. And one or two coasters out of a hundred is reasonable. But four out of 25??? I've still got 75 to go and shudder at the thought of how many of those will be coasters, too.

HASH(0xa2c615c4) out of 5 stars Excellent Value Sept. 26 2009

In the past, I've found DVDs from different companies may or may not be usable in all my equipment. Sony DVDs were compatible with all my equipment, but they can be pricey. I was happy to find that these Amazon DVD were compatible with a wide range of equipment. We've already burned DVDs on an Apple IMac G5, Dell Inspirion 15, Sony DRX-840U DVD burner and Toshiba DR410 DVD player/burner. No compatibility problems. And they are priced less than $19 for a 100 disc spindle! Excellent!

And although Amazon touts their new "Frustration Free - Ready to Ship" packaging, I received my package of DVDs in a small neat box marked "Ready for Shipping" INSIDE a huge box labeled C3 that was 19 X 13 X 8. I don't think the warehouses are clear on the concept yet. Although my account page allows Packaging Feedback on products I ordered, none of my Amazon Vine products, including this one, are on the feedback page. But this minor flub did not change my mind or rating for these DVDs, they are an excellent product.
