A con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive British partner Sydney Prosser is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso. DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia.

The film follows Irving Rosenfeld, played by Christian Bale, a con-man who runs a corrupt loan business alongside his seductive partner Sydney (Amy Adams). When busted by FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper), he is obliged to work together with him to lineup the arrests of several other people including congressmen and mafia members.
With awesome costumes and music choices that set you right in the time period, the movie is enchanting from the start. It may be a tad too long, but the cast of off-beat and interesting characters make up for that in the end. Christian Bale is certainly the standout, and seeing his performance a second time solidified that. Go in with a clear head, and you will most-definitely enjoy it. Rated R for language and sexual content, "American Hustle" is enchantingly good.
There is not a weak moment in the movie, except that it could have gone on longer and longer. The cast is wonderful. Christian Bale keeps amazing me with the range of his performances. The characters are adult, and don't have to prove it by swearing constantly (TWOWS), which means that it is a skillfully, brilliantly written film.
I just wonder how long before and how, they will make a Broadway musical out of it!
A wise movie to add to your collection; it will never gather dust on a shelf.
This is another classic con artist tale. It is a crime/thriller/drama/comedy. The acting was superb which made the script look substandard. Amy Irving is perhaps the sexist we have seen her to date. I never miss a film with Jennifer Lawrence who proclaims "Thank God for me." Her role starts out minor but then grows. The ladies room kiss with Amy Adams is something I predict will be on loop.
Seems like a good old fashion con artist film with some fine acting.
Parental Guide: F-bombs. Brief sex. No nudity. Stripper with pasties, most likely Amy Adams body double as face is not shown with nearly bare torso.
David O Russell directed the highly regarded The Fighter from two years ago which secured 7 Academy Award nominations, Academy Awards for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo,and a nomination for Amy Adams.
He wrote and directed Silver Linings Playbook one of the outstanding movies of 2011/12, which secured an Academy Award for Jennifer Lawrence last year, and a total of four acting nominations including Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, and nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
American Hustle reunites Russell, De Niro, Bale, Lawrence and Adams from these previous two hits, and continues the outstanding pedigree displayed in those movies.
Loosely based on the 1970s Abscam scandal, this is a multi-layered entertaining movie, involving a con man and his mistress, played by Bale and Adams, an emotionally tempestuous wife played by Jennifer Lawrence, organized crime elements represented by De Niro and others, and law enforcement interests played by Bradley Cooper.
I remember an interview Amy Adams gave two years where she complained that a journalist wrote that she did not have a sexual image at which she took great umbrage. Perhaps this was due to characters she played such as the Princess in Enchanted, or the nun in Doubt. She lays that particular criticism to rest in this movie playing a very sexual character, who wears skin clinging outfits, and no bra, ever. This all works to create a very alluring persona, and so she really pushes the envelope in this movie. I think her performance is the most memorable and nuanced of all the actors. Bale's character has a glued on comb over and that hairy thing does not fool anyone.
The other memorable performance that distinguishes this movie is that of Jennifer Lawrence. Two scenes in particular, one where she and her husbands mistress have a confrontation with an interesting turn. Very amusing.
The other a spectacularly messed up scene which I call the 'power of intention,' scene which had the whole theater laughing and for me was worth the price of admission. Another scene where she intensely lip-syncs I also found highly amusing.
Amy Adams has been nominated for Academy Awards four times for Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter , and The Master, without winning yet. Maybe this will be her year. I think she has shown great variety and ability in her roles. I particularly liked her turn as a rough tough warrior type role in The Fighter.
One thing that can be said for David O Russell, he knows how to write good roles for actors as all the acting nominations indicate. American Hustle has been nominated for seven Golden Globe awards, which augurs well for its Oscar ambitions.
American Hustle opened in limited release in the USA on December 13th 2013, achieving a highly impressive $76,000,000 in only three weeks of release. The movies most likely to win awards are mostly released in December perfectly timed for awards season, and this is definitely a cut above most movies you will see this year with some highly memorable scenes.
I think most people will love it, and I hope this was helpful.
