Stefan Grossman ~ American Idol Season 2: All Ti

Amazon.ca

Interested in visiting your favorite contestants from the second season of American Idol? Then this is the album for you, but be forewarned that something is lost in the translation from the small screen to the compact disc. Simon Cowell's scathing comments and Paula Abdul's head tossing add to the human drama; without those visual embellishments, the recorded version falls flat. Sure this is a talented bunch, but the material is mundane, with few of the finalists straying from the traditional arrangements. But when they do, it's sometimes worse. Ruben Stoddard's rendition of the Carpenters hit "Superstar" reeks of misplaced sincerity. The best cut on the disc is Kimberly Caldwell's throaty cover of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song," which gives the song some well-needed grit. And while Julia Demato's voice is no match for Etta James's full-bodied version of "At Last," Demato gives the classic a fetching kittenish spin. --Jaan Uhelszki

Top Customer Reviews

Here is a track-by-track review of this American Idol CD.
WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE (Top 10) - Good track, good idea to release for charity. The vocals are tight, and all blend well together, and I love it! (4/5)
SUPERSTAR Ruben Studdard - Ruben sang it, so of course it's good!! Very good vocals, another consistent song from our favorite Ruuuuben! My only problem is the intro is way too long... let's just get right to Ruben. (5/5)
ON THE WINGS OF LOVE Clay Aiken - Clay sang it, so of course it's good! He has a good voice, no doubt about it. This song is no exception > very good performance! (5/5)
AT LAST Julia DeMato - When I first heard this I was like "WHO IS THIS?!! JULIA?!?! NO WAY!!" It sounds nothing like her! On the show, I wasn't a big fan of hers (I was until the show was live) she didn't seem to pull off the songs well. But this song is actually not bad!! I love her vocals! She'd be a good recording artist! (4/5)
THREE TIMES A LADY Joshua Gracin - Good song. Doesn't really use his "country-style" vocals on this one. Shows his skills! (4/5)
LET'S STAY TOGETHER Trenyce - I wish she would have picked another song more suited for her voice. She did a good rendition of this one, but not as good as some of her other ones. (4/5)
BACK AT ONE Rickey Smith - Not as good as I would have thought. Vocals are okay, but not as captivating like on the show (3/5)
KILLING ME SOFTLY Kimberly Caldwell - Not being biased because Kim was my personal favorite, but she did really well. It displayed more of the upper-octave range in her voice. Good choice for her! (5/5)
OPEN ARMS Corey Clark - TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY!! He sang this one REALLY good! I wasn't really a fan of his on the show, but this song proves he can sure sing!

Im most surprised by Carmen. I COULDNT STAND HER VOICE! but..once you listen to her sing How Do i Live will change your mind. I hope she comes out with a cd. 5/5 stars
Now for Ruben...Well it was Boring AND LONG! Superstar i think was great for his voice, it sounds good, but its just so long and stressed. 3/5
On the wings of love (clay) was AMAZING! It was so good. I cant even put it into words. It was perfect. His voice makes me cry. He was robbed. 5/5
Kim Caldwells version of killing me softly is really good, she shouldnt of gone before Carmen. But, its to long and drawn out. 3/5
Coreys song open arms is just so bad. He was hot, but his voice was really bad. 1/5
Kim's over the rainbow is so annyoing! How many times must she SING this song? i mean its good but im so sick of hearin her sing it! 4/5
Three times a lady by josh sounds so PAINFUL! i like josh, i think hes a sweetie but this song [stinks]. 2/5
Let's Stay Together - Trenyce was good. I think she should of been in the top three (instead of Ruben) 4/5
Rickey was good. So was Charles. There not that talented though. But charles is just so adorable you gotta love him!
At last by Julia is great. She should of been at least in the top 5. 4/5
All in all the best Ranked from Clay, Carmen(beleave it or not!), and well no one else seemed 2 be that great.

"What The World Needs Now" - Awesome vocals. Pity Carmen and Josh aren't heard and Julia's ending is a bit small. (4/5)
"Superstar" - Ruben can sing but he has just never done it for me. Although many will disagree, he can be a bit predictable and boring. (3/5)
"On The Wings Of Love" - Classic, in every aspect. This song now belongs to Clay Aiken. His voice is superb and sends shivers down peoples spine. Clay Aiken is in every way an American Idol. (5/5 isn't enough to describe it)
"At Last" - Oh, my god. If I was a record producer and heard Julia for the first time on this recording, I would take her on without a doubt. She outshines all her performances on the show with ease. (4.5/5)
"Three Times A Lady" - Like Clay, there is no words to describe Josh's rendition of this song. He may not have been the best singer on the show but he comes a damn close second to Clay on this CD. (5/5 also not enough to describe)
"Let's Stay Together" - Trenyce was never one of my favourites but I did grow to like her before she went. Which is why I am a bit disappointed with this recording. If she recorded "Have You Ever?" it would have been much better. (3/5)
"Back At One" - Rickey sounds no different to Brian McKnight. Unfortunately Brian McKnight is not one of my favourite singers but it isn't bad. (3.5/5)
"Killing Me Softly With His Song" - Stunning vocals by Kimberly Caldwell. There is no way she was ready to go when she did. Definitely the best female on the CD (although Carmen isn't far behind). Kimberly was amazing on the show and even more so on this recording. Could be the start of her career. (5/5 easy)
"Open Arms" - Let's be realistic.

When the record companies are putting out garbage like this its no wonder they are in trouble. They really need to stop blaming file sharing and look at the product they are trying to shove down our throats. I am seriously shocked that anybody would shell out money for this.
I thought the pop music industry had hit an all time low with boy bands, Britney, Christina and the rest of the bubble gum teen pop its been putting out for the past few years. I guess they were not stooping low enough because now we are having a flood of these new novelty acts where the key word is novelty. As long as the american public is willing to buy into this garbage were going to be stuck with more bad cd's from American Idol contestants, Lisa Marie Presley and Kelly Osbourne.
A couple of the songs on this cd are classics when you listen to the recordings by the people who ORIGINALLY performed them. The rest of them should have stayed on whatever shelf they were collecting dust on. As far as this cd goes, if you want to hear bad renditions of these songs use the [money]for a couple of drinks at your local karaoke bar. I guarantee you'll hear versions of these songs better then this and you will have a much better time. Also you won't feel like an idiot 2 months from now when this AI novelty has worn out and somebody looks at your cd collection and sees you actually spent money for this...
