Judging by her current pose, the Material Girl has mutated into the Military Girl. Indeed, this time out Madonna launches an assault on the miscalculations of her past while also airing her grievances with a troubled world. Madonna has always jumped on trends, but, for the first time, she leaps and falls as she revisits the minimalist synth-pop that she helped define in the 80s and raps like Debbie Harry about lattes and nannies. She also divulges career and personal missteps that her audience recognized all along, and had already forgiven--or embraced. With the exception of the entrancing Bond film theme "Die Another Day," the music doesn't measure up to 1999's Ray of Light and '00's Music. And while Madonna has never been a stunning wordsmith, there is a distinction between the introspection on those albums and the self-absorption of American Life; the lyrics here often put one in mind of a cathartic letter one writes but never mails. --Beth Massa

EVERY SONG ON IT IS GREAT.
My favorite songs are Love Profusion, Hollywood, Mother And Father, I'm So Stupid, American Life, Die Another Day, Nothing Fails, Intervention, Nobody Knows Me, X-Static Process and Easy Ride (LOL notice how I put the entire album.... that's how great it is)
It's defenatly one of her best albums.
OK, enough of my venting! I think this is a terrific album. Madonna continues to do her own thing and takes her music in some unexpected directions. Madonna does a lot of introspection on this album.
1)American Life: many people seem to hate this song, mainly because of the rap. I actually like it. It's not one of her best ever, but she takes risks here and not enough artists do that nowadays.
2)Hollywood: I love this song. It is fantastic and I love the lyrics in this. My favorite line is "Music stations always play the same song. I'm bored with the concept of right and wrong."
3)I'm So Stupid: she does some powerful singing here. This is a pretty cool song and it is very good.
4)Love Profusion: another great song. It is one of this album's many highlights.
5)Nobody Knows Me: this has got some really smart lyrics. The line "It's a set up and I'm fed up" is really simple yet effective (as the best Madonna songs are).
6)Nothing Fails: excellent song. The choir at the end reminds me of "Like a Prayer". I love the meaning behing this song.
7)Intervention: probably the best song on the album. It is just so incredible and she does some of her best singing here. Everything about this song works.
8)X-Static Process: another good song. This has some really good lyrics in it.
9)Mother and Father: my least favorite song. It's good, but compared to the others I just happen to like it least.
10)Die Another Day: I love this song. I thought it was one of the coolest movie theme songs I've ever heard. Madonna really got it right with this song. She usually doesn't include her soundtrack songs, so I'm glad she did in this case.
11)Easy Ride: great way to end a terrific album. It really makes you think.
Having actually listened to this album (unlike so many of the reviewers here), I highly recommend it. I have listened to it several times and it gets better each time. Madonna gets really personal on this album and although it hasn't sold as well as her other albums, neither did Erotica and that was a really good CD. When the "Let's hate Madonna since that is the new cool thing to do!" bandwagon comes to a close, people will finally start to appreciate this album for what it is: a highly introspective album that takes chances and really does pay off for the listener. Until then, this album will continue to gain a following of people who enjoyed this CD when it wasn't the "right" thing to do.
On second listen, it appears that this album is much more relevant to the listeners than you would have thought.
Its truly thought provoking and moving, and anyone with any interest in self improveent, and a desire to discover 'something else' will pick up the messages form this album.
Put the messages aside, its laden with fantastic pop tunes that only Madonna can write and vocally beautiful.
American Life - we all know this song by now. The one with the 'rap'. Most people missed the point, its meant to be ironic and she isn't trying to be Missy E! Anti-materialism...
The album highlights as follows (hard to choose, all amazing!)
Hollywood - the 2nd single. a fantastic pop tune and a real corker.
Nothing fails - muted to be the 3rd single. Glorious, moving and helped along by the London Community Gospel Choir. Like a Prayer for 2003.
Intervention - WOW - the backing vocals (by Madonna) on this track are outstanding and truly life the song to another dimension. Gorgeous tune, classic Madonna.
Love Profusion - another glorious track about love. This girl has found happiness, of this there is no doubt.
Easy Ride - beautiful, i love the fusion between orchestral and electro.
As for the other tracks, I'm so stupid - a great rockier rack with her vocal sounding very 'pre-madonna' (fans will know what I mean).
Die Another Day - we all know this track. Perhaps not a great Bond song, but a fantastic dance track!
Nobody Knows Me - A great dance track, it builds and builds...The most electornic song on the cd.
BUY IT NOW!!! and hear the signs...
