Difficile de commenter cette gravure. Une vraie bombe en soi. Cela s'impose d'office avec la voix de Simone Kermes. Enfin, le moins que l'on puisse dire, c'est qu'il faut des nerfs solides pour écouter ce fougueux programme d'un seul trait. Andrea Marcon aurait pu faire une petite pause, le temps d'un concerto pour violon, pour laisser souffler l'auditeur. Quatre « Mottettis», survitaminés, et livrés en vrac, peuvent s'avérer une expérience ardue pour l'auditeur non rompu à ce type d'exercice.

En effet, la voix survoltée de Kermes entonne le motet « In Furore» avec une rare intensité. Appuyée par un orchestre magnifique, bonifié par une époustouflante prise de son, elle ne donne décidément pas dans la demi mesure. Andrea Marcon donne le ton à ses meilleurs archets: des motets ? Vraiment ? Plutôt des concertos pour voix ! Et quelle voix. La soprano Simone Kermes ne laissera personne indifférent. Son registre est résolument décapant. A trop vouloir décoiffer l'auditeur, le risque était de le perdre... Mais fort heureusement, plusieurs «arias (Larghetto) », fort bienvenus, viennent décrisper l'auditeur et lui permette de se laisser bercer par cette voix incomparable.

On ne peut passer sous silence les sublimes «Alleluias (allegro)» -un par motet- qui sont rendus avec une grâce infinie, d'une exquise beauté.

Une belle gravure pour Andrea Marcon qui sait se montrer audacieux sans Carmignola. Quiconque est rompu à ce type de voix sera ravi par cet album. En ce qui me concerne, je m'y aventure avec parcimonie et prudence. Personnellement, j'avais adoré la sublime gravure de Sandrine Piau récemment parue chez Naïve. Je lui reste fidèle.

I have enjoyed Kermes's contributions to several of Alan Curtis's Handel recording but with this album, she really impressed me. She has such a different sound then most of the "baroque specialists" singing today. Her intensity is amazing and technically this is the best I have heard her sound. The pieces, all sacred music, are amazing. Don't be fooled though. The themes may be religious but the music is intense and exciting.

This is singing of the highest order by Simone Kermes, one of the very best sopranos specializing in the baroque repertoire. Her technique is nearly flawless: clean articulation, rhythmic acuity, excellent control of the breath and the musical line. The voice is a bit wiry - more Maria Callas, say, than Renata Tebaldi (just the first example that comes to mind; don't shoot me!) but therefore agile and precise.
The first, third and fourth cantata are appropriately furious, turbulent and tempestuous (see titles). It's exciting singing. But the second, "Nulla in mundo pax sincera", is something more: it's a miracle of emotional and vocal shading and subtlety, expressing both the inwardness of contemplation and then the joy that arises from it. I cannot praise it highly enough.
If you enjoy baroque vocal music, especially it's sacred aspect, you should buy this CD. Very moving, very enjoyable.

This album comprises of four famous Vivaldi Motets for the soprano voice.
Top flight German baroque soprano Simone Kermes paired up with Macron in this performance, and surely, the performance is nothing short of being impeccable.
Kermes' singing is jaw-dropping in terms agility, articulation and intonation. The four motets chosen here (Vivaldi composed quite some more numbers for the soprano voices than these) are among the most technically demanding works of this genre. The motets all round up with a brief Alleluja, usually very florid and demanding, and hence picked by most performers for their showmanship.
That said, Kermes and Macron scored almost perfect marks for these piece in terms of technique and musicality. The pieces are sharp, short, witty and fully stylistically alert.
The only quibble that I have at listening is that the works are performed over the top in terms of virtuosic display, and at times (like the Allelujas), misfires took place with pitch problems.
True that the compositions lend much room for such display - but they are, fundamentally, sacred pieces. The second Motet, beginning with the famous aria Nulla in mundo pax sincera (RV 630), is at once comparable to Emma Kirkby's late 20th century rendition, and immediately one hears the vastly different approach between Kermes and Kirkby. The serenity, the ethereal beauty, the differing colour layers... all given way to virtuosic display by Kermes. The same would hold true for the other motets (cf. Naive's 'product' under the same genre).
While Kermes is usually terrific in Handel and probably JS Bach, her Vivaldi Motets would not be my first pick.

This is one disc that I keep revisiting again and again. I listen to it both at home and in the car. My favorite motet is "Nulla in mundo pax sincera", which calms and revitalizes me after a hard day's work. Ms. Kermes is a wonderful singer, and Vivaldi is a wonderful composer!
