The Animated Marx Brothers is a great idea for a book, especially for those of us who grew up seeking out these special cartoons. In his excellent introduction Joe Adamson points out the fact that the brothers didn't make a lot of films, so any scraps of Marx we could find was gold. Matthew's research is spot on, and the history of the players from the animation world is very interesting. My only qualm (and what keeps it from getting all 5 stars) is the perfunctory feel of the book. It kind of hits a wall subject-wise when it goes to online examples, and vanity projects. It kind of lost me there. Despite that, I recommend the book highly to Marx fans everywhere!
I found one cartoon with Groucho that Matt missed but to be fair it was from 2005 and he most graciously acknowledged it when I contacted him. Wow, I thought I collected Marx Bros.!!! A most thorough listing of all cartoon Marxes. Truly a labor of love and exhaustively researched and footnoted. I will be busy for weeks watching his finds on You Tube and going back through my collection. (Which really makes this a multi-media publication). A must for any Grouchophile!
