Product Description

From New York Times bestselling author and former Muslim Nabeel Qureshi comes this personal, challenging, and respectful answer to the many questions surrounding jihad, the rise of ISIS, and Islamic terrorism.

San Bernardino was the most lethal terror attack on American soil since 9/11, and it came on the heels of a coordinated assault on Paris. There is no question that innocents were slaughtered in the name of Allah and in the way of jihad, but do the terrorists’ actions actually reflect the religion of Islam? The answer to this question is more pressing than ever, as waves of Muslim refugees arrive in the West seeking shelter from the violent ideology of ISIS.

Setting aside speculations and competing voices, what really is jihad? How are we to understand jihad in relation to our Muslim neighbors and friends? Why is there such a surge of Islamist terrorism in the world today, and how are we to respond?

In Answering Jihad, bestselling author Nabeel Qureshi (Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus) answers these questions from the perspective of a former Muslim who is deeply concerned for both his Muslim family and his American homeland.

About the Author

Nabeel Qureshi is a speaker with Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. He holds an MD from Eastern Virginia Medical School, an MA in Christian apologetics from Biola University, and an MA in religion from Duke University.

Haven't finished it yet...but I like the energy of the book. How it explains the difference in being Moslem and what Islam is. I like how it shows what is authoritative for each Moslem and how they often don't know the roots or foundations of their faith. Much like many Christians! It has helped me to not polarize things...be more understanding, tolerant, caring, and kind to those who adhere to whatever branch of Islam the inherit. Thanks for opening my eyes!

Title: Answering Jihad: A Better Way Forward
Author: Nabeel Qureshi

Publisher: Zondervan
Date: 2016

Nabeel Qureshi, in his recent book, Answering Jihad, says that there is a better way forward to address the Jihadi movements of ISIS, Al Qaida, Boko Haram, Paris and others – a way that must uphold both truth and compassion.

Qureshi is a former devout Muslim and thoroughly versed in Islam, the Quran, Hadiths and the reigning worldview of Muslims. His previous book, Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus (Zondervan, 2014), is his story of coming to faith in Jesus.

In Answering Jihad, he traces the seemingly recent rise of Jihadi movements as a radical return to the roots of Islam. He argues that the historical foundation of Islam is terroristic. He argues that Islam is not a religion of peace.

Answering Jihad is essentially Qureshi’s answers to eighteen (18) common questions:
Question 1: What Is Islam?
Question 2: Is Islam “a Religion of Peace”?
Question 3: What Is Jihad?
Question 4: Is Jihad in the Quran and the Life of Muhammad?
Question 5: What Is Sharia?
Question 6: Was Islam Spread by the Sword?
Question 7: What Is Radical Islam?
Question 8: Does Islam Need a Reformation?
Question 9: Who Are Al-Qaida, ISIS, and Boko Haram?
Question 10: Who Are the True Muslims—Violent or Peaceful Muslims?
Question 11: Why Are Muslims Being Radicalized?
Question 12: Are Muslims Trying to Take Over the West with Sharia?
Question 13: Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God?
Question 14: Why Do Some Christians Call God “Allah”?
Question 15: How Does Jihad Compare with Old Testament Warfare?
Question 16: What Does Jesus Teach about Violence?

"In my experience as an American Muslim, there was absolutely no emphasis placed on violence....But my experience of Islam is not the only one...For other Muslims, violence is a part of the expression of Islam..."

"What is Islam?"

September 11, 2001.
Words can't express the horror and terror experienced on that day. What happened in New York was devastating in so many ways. It was equally devastating to the communities of American Muslims, including Nabeel Qureshi. He remembers that day vividly, like all Americans.

But what many Americans may not have known was the reality that was heard in Qureshi's mosque, "The terrorists who hijacked the planes on September 11 also hijacked Islam."

That may seem confusing, especially if you have little understanding of Islam and the people that practice this faith. The reality is that there are different thoughts or groups in Islam, or denominations of Islam, to use a Christian phrase. What Qureshi and his family practiced in America as Muslim faith was very different from the Muslim Faith that the hijackers practiced.

While even this little bit of knowledge is power and can change how one interacts with Muslims, there is so much more to this religion. There are history, reformations, and interpretations that can change how Muslims understand their faith and act it out. And in a world that is constantly bombarded with news of jihadi, terrorist acts, and disturbing videos of beheadings, it is important to understand what is going on and what is compelling these actions.

While some would be happy to be completely ignorant to these important difference, Nabeel Qureshi believes that there is a better way forward.

I highly recommend this slim volume as a very necessary part of our modern education. From a personal and in depth perspective Nabeel tackles one of the most puzzling questions of our time. What do Muslims believe about Jihad, is it a peaceful form of Muslim evangelism or a form that focuses on the spread of Islam by war?

Very readable and timely book given all that is happening in the world right now with regards to radical Islamic groups like ISIS, Boko Haram, etc. It's set up as a series of questions such as "What is Islam?", "Is Islam a Religion of Peace?", "What is Sharia?", etc. with an intelligent and thoughtful discussion following each question. It ends with a call for compassion to our Muslim neighbours rather than fear or anger or prejudice. I learnt so much about Islam reading the book and will look at the conflicts going on in our world in a much different light because of it.

Nabeel Qureshi does an excellent job tackling Islamic Theology! The book is laid out into three parts:

Part 1: The Origins of Jihad. What is Jihad? What is Sharia? Was Islam Spread by the Sword?
Part 2: Jihad Today: What is Radical Islam? Who are Al-Qaida, ISIS, and Boko Haram? Why are Muslims Being Radicalized?
Part 3: Jihad in Judeo-Christian Context: Do Muslims and Christians Worship the Same God? What Does Jesus Teach About Violence?

Nabeel tackles a lot of the questions people have, the chapters are in question form and are easy to read and understand. Nabeel digs right into the Islamic sources and even includes some extra Hadiths in the back of the book. Society and media are telling us one thing about IsIs and Jihad but the Islamic sources tell us a whole different story!

This is a must have for anyone interested in learning about Islam. How we can understand the Muslim people and how we can relate and love them. Nabeel pours his heart out for the Muslim people in this book and he also raises awareness to the fact that Islam at its core does not teach peace, it is the exact opposite. If you want to learn about the real Islam pick this book up and compare to what the media is telling you!
