I'm sure everybody's seen these movies. This is a great set, great picture, great sound, lots of commentaries on each of the 4 films. The best part of this set is just to watch the 2nd disc of each movie, back to back and see the whole "making-of" saga unfold. Ridley Scott's "Alien" seemed easy-to-make, compared to the struggles of Cameron and Fincher. Of course, Ridley always makes the 'near-impossible' seem easy. He's so well-prepared and has such great, inventive, pre-CGI ideas that save so much money and keep the studio happy. Yes, those are really his hands, inside those washing-up gloves, fluttering inside the plexiglas egg that Kane is about to stick his foolish face into.
Cameron's "Aliens" was a fight from day one. James is a perfectionist who knows everyone's job, on the set, and can do it better than them all. His movie sets would run smoothly if there were simply 100 Jimmy Camerons surrounding him. Cameron has a hard enough time with crews in America, but plunking him down into a typical British crew in Shepperton who have their tea break at 11 and a liquid lunch later on and stop for the day at 5... well, you can just imagine the conflicts. "Let the sackings begin!"
David Fincher's first film, the 'trial-by-fire', "Alien 3" was a fight between him and the studio all the way. This is a typical Hollywood story (like the story of Coppola and The Godfather). The clever studio hires the brilliant young director to basically do as he's told and save a bunch of money for them... but, the reason he's brilliant is that he has a definite artistic vision and he sees the project a certain way and he is extremely stubborn about doing it his way and not listening to the studio, no matter how many suits are standing around on the set watching him and wagging their fingers everytime he wants to take that one extra shot to get it just right. This 'making-of' was the most interesting of all of them because of what Fincher was up against coming into this film and the studio pulling the plug on him later and him washing his hands of the whole thing, once it was done. He's the only director who's missing from the extensive commentaries and interviews, which is a shame. But, at least, the 'director's cut' of the film has the restored beautiful exterior scenes which show how the doctor finds the barely-alive Ripley washed up on the shore.
Monsieur Jeunet's "Alien Resurrection" seemed to be a piece of cake for everyone involved. In his commentary he implied that he felt privileged to be shooting a huge Hollywood movie, he loves the 'Alien' series and he was there to give the studio what it wants. His attitude made for a smooth-running set. A lot of people dismiss "Alien 4" but I like his visual style. His D.P., Darius Khondji, brings that beautiful "City of Lost Children" look to this film. I even like most of his humor and sense of parody. I don't really like the ending or the new creature he came up with, but the story of the making-of this film is fascinating.
The Bonus 9th disc is one of those "let's amaze them by giving them 9 discs instead of just 8" sort of things. A truly archival disc containing a lot of written extras from the laser discs of the first 2 'Alien' films then just endless trailers from all of them. They did stick in some photos, drawings and video clips to break up the mountain of reading in the laser disc information, but it mostly seems like more work than it's worth.
On the whole, as a movie fanatic and collector, I'd say I'm happy with this set. After going through the whole thing I feel that I won't want to see another face-hugger or chest-burster for as long as I live... or at least not until next year when I go through the whole box again.

Great classic that still holds up today with sound and picture. Definitely binge worthy. Has action, drama and a little comedy. Great sci Fi series! It can get repetitive and the story drawn out but worth watching.

I have to say that this anthology really went far beyond my expectations. First off, I don't want to assume everyone reading this review is familiar with all the Alien films. WIth that being said, not all films are equal. The first film, Alien, really holds up very well by today's standards. The effects and set pieces are amazing. Also, it is perhaps the scariest of all the films. This restored BluRay looks and sounds amazing! My advice to people is to choose "theatrical edition" when watching it. The director's cut is not a "director's cut" at all but a forced studio revision to help market the DVD set that came out years ago. In fact, it makes for a more lacking film than the original.
My faviourite of the series, Aliens, has never looked so good. I am assuming that this even looks better than the theatrical version since the original was produced with that 80's film grain that was noticible in this film and others such as Predator. The use software to remove the grain but not so much that it takes away from the detail of the film. In the darker scenes you can see it a bit but that's a minor gripe because the rest of the film looks absolutely amazing. As a film itself, it really raised the bar for scifi action and the effects not only hold up well today, I believe they surpass some of the effects today. For isntance, watch the Queen Alien in this film, and then in AVP. While the AVP alien is more mobile, it looks artificial compared to Cameron's practical effects. The Director's cut of this version is, in fact, a director's cut and makes for a better film, albeit arguably.
The third film is where the series really starts to fall apart. There were a lot of conflicts between the director and studio, and it shows. There is an alternate version of the film which is only worth watching if you're interested in seeing the differences because the scenes aren't color corrected and the film still feels disjointed this way. The original film isn't that bad. In fact, on it's own, it's quite good. Fincher is really a great stylistic and actor driven director. The film goes back to the themes of isolation and fear as the first film, but the way the movie opens really makes a lot of Ripley's decisions in the second movie seem in vein.
The forth film is a disaster. Again, the studio got involved and I don't think the right director was chosen. Whedon's original script was butchered and the film that resulted is really terrible. Worth watching? Sure... but even compared to the third film it's bad.
The extras are unbeatable! I am really impressed at the care that went into this collection. You really can't go wrong with these films under $40 as the value is incredible. I highly recommend for yourself, or a great gift for someone.

Alien was amazing but the Bluray video transfer of Aliens was unwatchable. It lost all of the original film's looks. All colours, shadows, highlights and details became way too sharp. I tried to adjust my TV to compensate but it did not work well. Still a very enjoyable movie. Just a bit hard to watch.

For any collectors like me wondering what’s in here, it’s the Alien Legacy discs from 1999. The first ever dvd release of the quadrilogy, and still very cool in my opinion. So for $16, I was more then happy to own this piece of Alien history.

If you're after a review of the films, this isn't the place to look. I'm concentrating on the boxset presentation. To that end, this is a fantastic purchase.
All the films come in 2 flavours. The original theatrical, and the directors/assembly/extended versions. I'm not 100% sure, but this blu-ray edition might use the extra disk space (over the DVD version) to hold both copies of the films. This is different to the DVDs limited storage and the way the DVD was able to play the 2 versions.
With the DVD, they used a flag to chapter skip to the additional parts, or end some scenes early depending on which version you wanted. It was a good technique, but some players had noticeable pauses as the player skipped round the disk surface. It seems logical that the blu-ray's extra capacity allows the 2 versions of the film to be stored seperately. Theres no pausing, layer break issues, nothing to detract from enjoying the films.
The films themselves are supposedly enhanced digitally. Not too sure of the virtues of this on the whole, but there is one glaringly obvious bonus for 'Alien 3' aficionados. Some of the audio that had been ruined after scenes were cut, and now reinserted for the assembly cut of the film, has been markedly improved. There's still an obvious background hiss, but at least now you're able to hear the dialogue. Aside from that, you'll just have to take thier word that the digital enhancement does anything accross the disks.
Each film comes loaded with additional features. Unfinished scenes, documentaries, commentaries, picture galleries, trailers, interviews... They all seem standard fare for blu-ray now, but this set really does the franchise justice.
This was one of my first blu-ray purchaes, even though I already owned (and still do) the DVD edition. I'm not in any way regretting buying this.

Feel ripped off
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on July 27, 2022Verified Purchase
To start I realise I was buying a second hand boxset but after purchasing the 4 disc die hard box set from the same company and the condition was as described as "Very Good"and was in perfect condition, I was confident that the Alien 4 disc boxset also described as "Very Good" would be the same.........
Well how wrong I was and feel ripped off as is the box containing the discs plus is very very worn. NOT AMUSED.
I already own the Remastered first edition Region 1 dvd 9 disc Alien boxset which I purchased on the first day of its release which I have been offered silly money for and bought the bluray versions just to see if the picture and sound have improved as the dvds look fantastic played on a multi region pioneer 4k player and Panasonic OLED TV.

Very Interesting version of the first film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on September 30, 2020Verified Purchase
I only bought this because I was interested to see the alternative cut of the original film. The Alien Franchise has never really excited me but the first film with it's extraordinary vision has always remained an unshakable classic and stands up against modern Sci fi films easily. I found the alternative cut fascinating and I can't decide which version I prefer because Two key scenes in the new version are really good and actually develop the story and relationships on the ship that were not in the original but the original is really good ... so ... who knows.

You know the Alien films, so no need to comment too much on that. For me the first two are outstanding; 3 & 4 are ok, but not classics like 1 & 2 IMO. However, at this price get all four! I was looking for the Blu-ray of Aliens only & came across this instead - for a couple of pounds more I've now got the first 4 films, including the extended versions! What's not to love?

Awesome Alien Anthology!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on May 14, 2019Verified Purchase
I'm a fan of all the Alien films, and yes Alien and Aliens are the standout features here. But besides those 2 amazing films, Alien 3 and Resurrection in my humble opinion, are not bad films! They just have different feel to the first 2, and seem a bit darker, almost a cult status. Each of the film's has an original theatrical version, and a special extended edition version, with extra scenes.
If you're a fan of the Alien franchise, there's nothing not to enjoy here, and all for the bargain price of £12.99! I'll be enjoying this collection for years to come!!
