About the Author

Anthea Garman is an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University, South Africa where she teaches writing and editing and leads a research group investigating media and citizenship in South Africa. She was a journalist during the states of emergency in the 1980s and through the transition to democracy in the 1990s working for the Rand Daily Mail, Cape Times, Sunday Times and The Witness.
