“This book is for anyone whose philosophy is that dieting shouldn’t mean restricting yourself to eating small portions of bland vegetables, side salads or relying on diet shakes…Isa shows that, with the right ideas and inspiration, diet food can be quick, imaginative and tasty.”
Vegetarian Times’, November/December 2010
“Offers 125 recipes for low-fat, plant-based dishes that don’t skimp on flavor.”
Vegetarian Living (UK), December 2010
“Jam-packed with mouth-watering vegan recipes that are low in fat and light on calories…[Moskowitz’s] recipes are visual and gastronomic delights, which inspire the reader to try new things and cook outside of their comfort zone, while never underestimating the beauty of the familiar.”
“[Isa Moskowitz is] the queen of the vegans.”
BBC Good Food (UK), February 2011
“This is a vegan diet book, but forget your preconceptions and look at the food. Isa is an amazing cook—her recipes are delicious and written for people who want to lose weight, but not their enjoyment of food. She uses spices cleverly to make you forget you’re eating low fat and ups the grain and veg content to keep you satisfied. Isa reworks favorites making them lighter and healthier. Her book is worth buying for the salad dressings alone.”

“As with previous Moskowitz books, one thing not sacrificed is flavor. She plays with Asian, Mediterranean, Indian and Latin cuisine with her recipes in ways that make you feel like you’re not losing taste by cutting out fat.”

Moskowitz is nothing short of a genius. I received this book a week ago, and have already made ten of the 125 recipes, because it's that good. The recipes call for little to no fat, but are absolutely delicious, and very filling. The portions are hardly small, either, and you start to appreciate how a hearty size of vegetables goes a long way in nutrition without too many calories. Recipes like the Green Goddess dressing, a creamy dressing without any dairy and barely any fat, are to die for, and might change the way you eat for life. The Chickpea Piccata was the first thing I made, and I can safely say I've never tried anything like it before.
The author also suggests complementary dishes, which makes meal planning a snap. I can't wait to try the rest of the recipes -- this might be my favourite cookbook yet!
I own many cookbooks, but hers are the ones I use most. I feel like she has really WORKED to get those recipes right, making sure each detail is perfect, unlike many other chefs I know who just sort of put cookbooks together without reading a recipe twice. Isa's not just writing cookbooks for paychecks, she's on a mission: to show the world that vegan food is amazing. And I, for one, am convinced.
The recipes are to-the-point and true to the title. Isa Chandra Moskowitz is a blessing.
I have learned so much from this book and far exceeded my own expectations. I never knew I could make a cauliflower lasagna that other people would actually want to eat! The only complaint I have would be that the typeface is a little boring but that's easily forgiven when you account for how much sheer content there is in this modest little book!
I would recommend this book to the busy family chef or to anyone who's interested in really earning their kitchen legs. The recipes can range from absolute beginner to level 5 mom, but there is something for everyone, and plenty of room to explore.
Cons: My book was falling apart 2 weeks after buying it. The binding is bad: the middle pages are falling out. Don't expect pictures, there isn't many and they don't look very good.
