The Astonishing [2CD] - Being a longtime Dream Theater fan, this is their first grand foray into a rock opera, and I think they did a great job, I am really looking forward to seeing this played live with all the stage sets and costumes! If you take it as a soundtrack to a rock opera as one body of work you will enjoy it.

Another below average effort by DT. Their self titled album that preceded this cd was also pretty average. Since the departure of Portnoy the albums have lacked an edge and some creativity. This album is like a boring soundtrack. Lot of the songs just don't have any edge or inspiration. There is some good stuff, but not enough to warrant a 2 cd package.

Another Dream Theater's cd that I bought and, after many listenings, didn't really enjoy.
Yes, great musicianship, but not enough thrills, surprises, etc.

This album really grew on me. At first I thought it was a little strange but after you start listening you realize these guys know how write and play music (which I always knew but this confirms it). To the average person who does not appreciate great song writing they may not enjoy it so much. It does not have the harder rock influence some of the other DT albums do. If you like good music that has substance to it this is it. Some great melody's, orchestra, & drama, In Rush's early albums they knew how to tell a story using music, making the music relate the feeling to the listener. DT has done this especially with this album. I believe time will testify it to be one of there best.

Change of direction on this concept album, but still the great Dream Theater genius at it's best. I can't wait ot see them here in Montreal in april 2016 to hear and see this great album. From what i can read in the story behind this album, we are in for a futuristic "Game of Thrones" type movie to accompany us with the music.

The description of the CD sounded interesting. Liking Progressive Rock, I took a chance on the group, which I didn't know, and the music was great.

I do not care for this album at all. From the Pacman-esque keyboard fills to the Disney inspired ballads, the most common comment among our listening group is "did they try to write a soundtrack for children?"
I miss the power; I miss the metal; I miss the prog; I miss Dream Theater.
Sure, there are elements of each hiding in places, but this is not the band we love. I see there are many reviews that give 5 stars and that is great: it means those folks thoroughly enjoy this album! So I suggest to preview it before you buy; you may not be getting what you expect.

Interesting epic rock opera. Not my favorite Dream Theater oeuvre, but definitely worth listening to and owning.
