Anna is a near contemporary of mine, she was born in 1920 and I in 1927. She died in 1986 and never lived to write as an adult in a free Poland or when there was not a war going on. Personal tragedy included death of her husband when he was in his late 40's. She had been a non believer like many Polish intellectuals of her era yet the death of her husband turned her not away but to a spiritual life. She even learned Hebrew to translate the Psalms into Polish. Her poetry is above all, intelligible. It is honest, simple, spiritual and transcendent, intellectual, wry, emotional, humorous, profound and philosophical, and as poetry, lyrical. One on my heroes, Milosz, called her a good poet but not of the first rank. I must disagree with him. For me she has been one of the most enjoyable poets I have read of the 20th century. I have given this book to people whom I regard as a gift and I delight at their responses. PS What fun her notebooks are.

An essential book for any poet
on April 20, 2012 - Published on Amazon.com
I bought this book after reading the poem "A Prayer That Will Be Answered" online. It has since become one of my very favorite books of poetry. I read it several times a year. Kamienska writes in accessible language (of course, I base this observation on the translation from the Polish) and clear, precise images. And yet these seemingly simple poems have enormous depth. They shine with a love for the world, with faith despite life's tragedies and disappointments, and with an appreciation for the ordinary pleasures of life: bread, the humming of bees, the forest floor. The book also includes selections from Kamienska's notebooks. These are profound poems that are not afraid to be honest and beautiful. It is, to me, almost a sacred book.

One of my favorite books of all time - read it all in the library and bought it again anyway just because it's that good. Poignant, unpretentious, but with dazzling imagery.
