This is a fantastic book. Inspiring, optimistic, thoughtful, intellectual and well balanced. What makes it most interesting is to see how then Senator Barack Obama of Illinois saw his people, his country, his political system and Washington. He believed in a different approach, he believed in honor and outreach. He understood compromise and the notion of sacrificing a battle in order to win a war. He was both idealistic and realistic. He dared to dream of new paths and new ways to travel them but he realistically understood the past history and present day of politics in Washington.
As President Barack Obama quickly learned and certainly could have never imagined, he ran in to a wall of opposition from the Republican party and like many of us, individuals within the American electorate were spooked by change which also figured into a very slow go for him and his administration. He faced some amazing challenges during his presidency, he certainly forged new directions and when you compare the outlook and insight from this book to how he handled himself as president, you can see that he never deviated from who he was/is. With the benefit of hindsight, this book becomes (imo) an even better read as we can now see how his ideals and approaches held up against his presidency.
President Barack Obama is a man of deep conviction, values and optimism. He is even a dreamer but he is nobody's fool and history will judge him much more for his courage to look forward than his political scheming or game play.
If you enjoy his oratory manner, you will enjoy his writing.
