I am a sucker for debut novels, especially HF and when they take place in a time period I am unfamiliar with, all the better. Puts a little bit of pressure on the author right there, with Avelynn I was not disappointed at all.

I like Avelynn, a strong and determined woman, smart and brave as well. The late 800's was a brutal time in England, not just because of the Vikings, but also for the fact that women were at the mercy of man, with no choice as to the direction their life went. The author created a story of suspense and mystery as Avelynn took/tried to take control of her life. Not knowing what was taking place this book had me nervous with each page turn as to what would happen next. It just seemed she hit so many obstacles on this journey and history does not always have that 'happy ever after' ending.

The supernatural part of this story was interested and it added that extra element which fit right into the story. Though the romance part didn't quite resonate too well with me, maybe because of the time gap, I am not totally sure. The ending left it open for a sequel and I hope there will be one because I will like to see what is next for Avelynn.

The author definitely knows this time period and the amount of research is evident, though I would have loved to see author notes at the end end just to see what was real and fiction

5* At last, a female protagonist who rolls on her own

AVELYNN by Marissa Campbell is already an auspicious debut thanks to kudos from New York Times best seller Susannah Kearsley. Not only does it feature high stakes heroics set against insurmountable odds in 9th Century Saxon England, but it takes the uncommon approach of setting the female protagonist down amidst a wild band of Viking marauders that she conquers, not just through sex, but through visceral, physical chutzpah with a broad sword. Travelling the length and breadth of the land in search of justice, Avelynn is made real because she gets dirty, bleeds, suffers failures and fights back. She is not the stuff of Marvel Comics people, but a real flesh and blood woman of the kind not seen lately in fiction or on HBO. A pagan priestess, she relies on spells and potions to assist her in her quest, but there are no dragons, merlins or otherwise supernatural beings to get her out of a jam. It’s all her in a rich tapestry of details that set this readers sense’s alight: I could smell the fires at night. For those who like a good fight, check out AVELYNN.

Hyperbole in this case only begins the truth...here is an action heroine, Avelynn who defies culture and clan to do battle and yet remains surprisingly innocent in the realms of love and desire. Her Viking opponent discovers she has taken a treasure...his heart. He determines to school her in the ways of love. Another defiant act, their love laces through geography and battles in a desperate desire for fulfillment. This is a great read, fun and filled with action with a heroine you'll want to see more from...the dashing and defiant, stubborn and courageous Avelynn.

A rollicking tale of fearless warriors, feisty heroines, despicable villains, deception, murder and romance all set in a well researched time period. Ms. Campbell is able to bring 869 A.D. alive for the modern reader with her use of language and colourful descriptors. If you enjoy a good story told well, you are in for a treat.
