Introduction
Setting Intention
One of the most powerful practices we can do is set intention. Setting intention is akin to putting the rudder on a boat to guide in stormy weather. It is also like using a map when going on a road trip. With either tool, you can change direction when you feel the need but you are on the lookout for a clear pathway to get you where you want to go.
Here is a story of a young student in my classroom that demonstrates the usefulness and power of setting intention as a daily practice. Nigel, a boy of eight, had a very difficult time socially. Every day there was an issue on the playground or a tussle in the classroom. He would go home and say, "Nothing good happens—ever." As you can well imagine, his parents were very worried. They would wait for his daily report on how bad things were and become agitated and scared. They came in after school sharing their frustrations and concerns. Both parents wondered if they should pull him out of school and teach him at home. They worked, so this option was not viable.
Along with other daily mindfulness practices, each day I worked with him to write in his journal one small thing that was good or brought him joy. Slowly his story changed. Bit by bit he acknowledged moments of joy and they started to build into something greater that he could write about in his journal. One day he filled a whole page. I also had him set intention for his day: To look out for the good things, like when another child asked him to play or asked him to be a partner in an activity. Lo and behold, when he paid attention, he saw that he was asked to partner and small things did go his way. When class-sharing time came, he was able to voice a special moment and smile. He expressed that everything wasn’t bad and he had shared good moments with peers in the room. The other children shared they had fun with him too. I saw him light up when he heard this mutual joy. At the end of the year, he decided to stay at the school as he had so many friends to play with at recess.
I also worked with the parents and suggested that instead of looking for a report of the bad things, they might ask him what was one good thing that happened. This reinforced and helped their son remember that there were good moments in the day.
I can’t say every day became easy for him or that all his struggles were gone, but he began to notice good things happen and he learned to set intentions to look for the positive rather than the negative. This chapter offers you a variety of ways to set intention with yourself and your family. For teachers, the lessons easily translate into morning classroom practices. We invite you dive in and try these practices while noticing the difference that finding the "good" makes in your days. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

A Wonderful Resource for anyone mentoring children. Fun, informative, easy to use, this book is full of activities and insights to be put into action and shared together with the children in your life. I wish these tools were available when I was young so I could have consciously grown and learned to practice and vocalize these concepts with my parents, siblings and peers. How differently my conditioning would have been and how much healthier and stronger my start in life if I had a book like this to share with the adults around me. This book should be in every schools' curriculum and on ever parents bed side table. It will be a joyful companion in the journey you share with the children you love infusing it's readers with joy that will deepen each time it's pages are opened.

Awakening Joy for Kids was just the sort of book I wanted. Michele shares great suggestions for bringing mindfulness into your home without complication. It does not feel like adding "one more thing to do" for our already overprogrammed lives. She offers a range of projects which are easy to do; some of which only require you and your child, pencil and paper, or just a few upcycling things around the house. My kids especially like the Magical Cave mind exercise. I also found she gives me the words to explain more clearly to my 9 and 11 year olds why we already do some things, like thank you notes and giving gratitude before dinner.
For teachers, I think there are a lot of great ideas on how to incorporate focus, calm and values into a classroom in a way that respects the diversity of cultures and religions children bring to the modern classroom. And as Michele notes... it is not just the kids that benefit from a little more calm and focus!
But what I like the best is that Awakening Joy for Kids is not just another better parenting (or teaching) book! There is plenty of message in James' chapter to help me improve as an individual. He offers things I haven't thought about, things I have forgotten, and ideas that teach and challenge me. Mindfulness makes me a better mom but it also makes me a better me... just for myself.

This book is a treasure.
It is beautifully and simply written with so many tangible examples of how to incorporate lessons of mindfulness, kindness and compassion with my children. I am so grateful for these simple and profound examples provided in this book which are so easy to incorporate into your day or chat with your children.
Today we were on the beach for dinner and our eldest son came to sit on my lap and cuddle in for a bit in between his playing on the logs with his brother. Having him close, the sun warming us, the waves lapping up and watching our youngest happily playing on the logs was giving me that giddy and joyful feeling. Instead of my usual gush about how much I love him and how lucky I feel to get to be his mom, I told him that him coming to have a cuddle with me made me feel so good inside and that it always made me feel so good to have that time with him. I got a big hug and beaming smile in return, and he came back several times during the rest of the evening to sit with me. I have asked the boys to write down what brings them calm and peace and joy for their own reference to help them in the future, however, was reminded by this amazing book that by communicating my needs for my own happiness to my boys, I am empowering them to experience their ability to purposefully make life more wonderful for someone else. I am excited to read and learn more and try out more of the lessons.
I also want to add, for the teachers who are interested in reading this book that I had the privilege of having Ms. L as my teacher around 25 years ago and she did all this in the classroom everyday, we did yoga, meditation, art, lots of outside time and we all felt so special and loved by her. I think it is so wonderful that she has written this book to share her insight and experience with all those interested.

This book is a joy to read and use. As a classroom teacher I am often looking for ways to boost self-esteem, reduce anxiety and create a sense of safety in the classroom. This book offers many thoughtful and easy suggestions on how to approach these issues from experienced teachers who actually practise these activities in the classroom. Thanks so much!

This amazing book is so easy to read, but easier to implement into your classroom daily life. A few of my students (if not all) really need some joy in their lives. After reading the first chapter I went to school the next day and tried a lesson. It worked perfectly and now it will be part of our daily classroom routine. Thanks for opening the door to this important conversation :)
