HASH(0xa13ab3f0) out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for Feb. 27 2006
By A. Hagberg - Published on
Format: Hardcover
I bought Zondervan's "Understand the Bible" NIV commentary a while back and found it to be cumbersome and entirely too scholarly. I purchased a copy of the Baker Bible Commentary for my teenage daughter, because it was written in more of an "every day" vernacular, and liked it so much that I bought one for myself. This volume gives you the historical background of events in the Bible, along with a verse-by-verse commentary, yet you won't be crossing your eyes as you try to lumber through it. I've found it to be perfect for my own private Bible study, and also for my role as a small group Bible study leader.

HASH(0xa13ab444) out of 5 stars Very helpful June 13 2009

I think this commentaty is easy to read and very helpful in understanding the scripture. Some comemtaries and study bibles have a lot of topical articles and charts. Baker's commentary sticks with the basics with introductory articles and commentary notes for each book. It also seems theologically balanced to me.

HASH(0xa13ab720) out of 5 stars Great General Commentary Feb. 19 2014

It is always hard to find good commentaries on the whole Bible. Sometimes some are too shallow, and other times they are too deep or unclear; a good balance is hard to find. This commentary is fairly well balanced, but is more of a summary commentary, meaning it takes sections, instead of individual verses, and comments; though sometimes it will specifically interact with certain verses.

It is also hard to rate this book as a whole because each commentary section on each book of the Bible is done by a different author, so some sections on certain books will be outstanding, while others may be inconsistent and not as well done.

Overall I do enjoy this commentary and usually find some comments helpful for teaching or for my own personal Bible study. It usually gives a good summary of the passages discussed, though it may not answer the questions you have on specific verses; I would recommend a supplementary commentary written on a specific book for in depth study.
