Apart from The Beach Boys "Smile Sessions", "The Basement Tapes" is probably the most highly anticipated lost recordings recorded in the sixties.
Really improved sound quality compared to the mid-seventies release of this album (there is a bonus 6th disc which the liner notes state, "the tracks are of historic importance but have very poor sonic quality", but the sound is still good enough to enjoy the songs, & sound pretty much like a Basement tape bootleg).
There is a bewildering amount of outstanding material, which to be honest would take months to trawl through & digest (but I can't wait to review it!). It is fascinating that in 1967, as the musical world exploded with countless displays of innovation, pushing the boundaries of what music could achieve & represent, Dylan on the other hand decided to take a simpler almost spiritual take on music, exploring his musical heritage.
A couple of highlights, "Big River" written by Johnny Cash (Cash opened his "Live At San Quentin" show with the song), "The Auld Triangle" which the Pogues made there own, & a bluesy version of "Blowing in the Wind".
I think the big elephant in the room is the price, this is impart due to a Hard backed book being included with the CDs & quite a lavish layout (although there's no track by track info, which seems a little strange), it may have been nice to have a budget version of the album, without all the bells & whistles.
I think if your like me, you've been waiting so long for this music, you are going to purchase it regardless of price, it's just put a bit of a tarnish on what should have been a memorable release.

Bob Dylan and the Band best combo since penutbutter and jelly (assuming you like penutbutter and jelly). It's hard to believe but the Dylan / Band output has been very small except for some live records you Basiclly had a few tracks on Self portrait and the studio record Planet Waves all we had was the 2 disc Basement Tapes collection. We now get almost six hours of recordings from the basement tape sessions (they actually were recorded in a few different locations but why let facts screw up a great album title). The sound on this set is good for it's source (2 track reel to reel) but it does very from track to track. It really is cool hearing the different members finding their way thru these songs (It's like sitting in a rehearsal hall with top notch musicians). A lot of these songs have never been officially by Dylan or the Band but were released by other artists (one of the books has a great collection of photos of the different 45's put out of these songs by various artists).
When interviewed Robbie Robbertson pointed out all the sonic issues from where they recorded (I am talking about the basement of Big Pink) with concrete floors, cinder block walls and a big metal furnace it was not ideal for the task at hand but Garth worked his magic and got it all on tape. The people at Columbia did a wonderful job remastering the tracks.
This is a first class package across the board. Beautiful sound (remembering the source) two hard covered books in a hard slip case. Great liner notes with colour and black and white photo's.
If you are a Dylan or a Band fan this is a must. Great companion peice to the "Isle of White" CD from last years box set and lets face it they don't make music like this anymore so getting hours of it is like finding the "Arc" of Rock music. Again this is a must have!!
