The box itself is cool; flashy and sings the tune. The DVDs are awesome quality. The features with them are impressive. I have the box itself on display on my TV stand. It was great getting all of the seasons on DVD, and they were all so crystal clear. A must for any collector!
The package that it all comes in is good, but the DVD's are thin. You have to be careful taking some of them out because it feels like you might actually break one.
The bonus features are pretty good. I liked the special features DVD with Adam West. The booklet describing the episodes is minimal. If they had instead included The Official Batman Batbook (a book that came out in the '80's) then it would have been an awesome package.
It was great seeing all these episodes again. My favourite villain is King Tut, I just loved Victor Buono's over-acting.
The criminals were bad, the good guys were good, good always triumphed over evil, and everyone played fair - no one brought a gun to a fistfight, the knockout gas was never poison, just harmlessly sleep-inducing, and they always gave our heroes a chance to escape their nefarious deathtraps. The bad guys had charisma and personality and were in the "crime game" (Riddler's words) as much for ego or fun as for the loot (which always came in white bags with black dollar signs on them).
Of course our heroes were totally naive squares, women were helpless dupes or distracting damsels, and values were pure, wholesome and chauvinistic in the extreme.
But the colors and campiness and altruism of the whole thing made it a comic book come to life, and as a child I just loved it. The theme song and the intro and outro graphics stuck with me over the years, as did the underlying values of the show. To watch an episode of Batman as an adult is, for me, to go back to my childhood for a few moments - a happy and warming experience of innocence and simplicity. The hokiness that I never noticed as a kid is now sometimes annoying and other times hilarious, but doesn't detract from the magic that is this show.
The packaging is fabulous in appearance and design, and easy to use. All the very welcome mementos stay neatly within the box. I am still wondering whether somewhere in a box at the back of a closet I may find my original Batmobile to match the new reproduction that came with this set. If I do, I now have a perfect place to keep it. And the quality of the picture and sound is just great!
