Product Description

Make a deal with the devil and you might get what you want, but will it be what you need?

Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate.

And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.

Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So... what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?

Likely, the last thing you expect.

'Beard Science' is the third book in the Winston Brothers series, is a full-length romantic comedy novel, and can be read as a standalone.

Beard Science is my first time reading a Penny Reid book but I kept seeing this book and really wanted to read it and so I was so glad when I got the opportunity to as I loved this witty romantic comedy about two unique and quirky characters. Obviously, I haven't read the first two books in this series but that didn't hamper me and I could fully follow along no problem.

Jennifer and Cletus had such an incredible connection that steadily builds; it's not overly obvious at first their chemistry but I loved the way it plays out. At first you think these two could be opposites but it quickly becomes clear how similar they are and perfect they are for each other and the slow build up really suits and fits in with both Jennifer's and Cletus's characters. The sub-characters played an important part in helping to develop both characters further and showing different sides to their personalities, on top of the dual points of views. Both the main characters and sub-characters were all really likeable and the author has a real ability to create complex, unique, and quirky characters that appeal to a reader.

Beard Science was well written with a witty writing style to reflect the humour of the book. There is a slow to steady pace, allowing for the characters' relationship to be developed rather than being just a book where they have an obvious instant connection that you can clearly see will end up with a happily-ever-after. The plot, as already stated, was refreshingly unique where you really didn't feel like you knew exactly what would come next (there is rather unusual circumstances that bring the two characters together) and is strong from start to finish.

This book deserves all of its stars because it made me laugh, smile, grin and chuckle. It also made me cringe, shake my head in frustration, and figuratively bite my nails in anticipation.

Come on, who didn't love Cletus??? I've loved this character since the first time he was introduced in Beauty and the Mustache (Ashley and Drew's story). He was freaking awesome. He was diabolical, manipulative and amazing. I loved this character. The way he manipulated people and situations. His plans of mayhem. And how hilarious was his plan for leprosy? LOL!! It's really funny because I saw a lot of myself in his characteristics which immediately made me connect with him. Yes, I admit to bonding with a fictional character. I do it all the freaking time!!

I loved the slow build of friendship and then unexpected lust and love that developed between Cletus and Jennifer. The way he saw her and wanted her to see herself was beautiful. I did experience some frustration with the way that Jen seemed to just accept the way she was treated, but I was so glad to see all of the Winston clan step up and have her back.

Fave quotes (all from Cletus lol):
"This was our beginning.
I couldn't wait for the middle.
And I never wanted it to end."

"For the first time in my life, change was synonymous with hope and anticipation. I looked forward to it. And that was revolutionary."

"You want to know what you are to me? Fine. You're my beginning, middle, and end."

Each quote was just so damn swoon-worthy. Cletus definitely made himself at home in my heart and I'm sure he'll do the same for anyone who takes the chance to meet him!

This is everything I expected and so much more! And I lurve it!

Yes, this can standalone but I seriously don't know why you'd want to not read the first 2 books in this series. These Winston boys, I tell ya, GAH, I want to be Ashley, their sister, yes! They're all too adorable and lovable for words, GAH!

Anyhoot, this is about Cletus. Cletus is everything I expected and so much more! See, there's another reason why you can't skip books in this series. You need to build up to the experience of Cletus:p Right from the start, I doubt he won't catch your attention.

He's odd, he's sneaky, he's cunning, he's sweet, he's funny, he's quiet, he's smart, he's thoughtful, he's caring, he's sincere... He dances to his own beat and stays true to himself... He really is quite an enigma... Regardless, he makes me smile...

❝ I only had time for twenty-four people (tops) in my life, and I already had six siblings. Twenty-four people was an average of two birthdays a month. Ain't nobody got time or more than two birthday celebrations a month. That's a lot of cake, and I'm particular about my cake.❞
He has own version of wisdom, in a way that only he can pull (translation: Cletus-ism)
❝ Bullsh!it was the adult version of Santa Claus. For reasons I'll never comprehend, the general population seemed to enjoy wallowing, spouting, and believing in bullsh!t.❞
❝ Saying someone would make a great politician is like saying someone would make a great serial killer. It's not a compliment.❞
And my favorite:

❝ If you're after a life-long baking partner, avoid indiscriminate bakers. And if you take on a reformed, previously indiscriminate baker, make sure he's had his kitchen thoroughly inspected by the health department.❞
