About 20 years ago I bought a bootleg VHS tape of all the Beatles videos at a record show in Toronto. I literally played the tape to death. Did not last long enough to be transferred to DVD and then the Beatle Anthology came out and in some cases you got the full videos but in most cases they were incomplete and I was afraid they were the best versions we would ever get but thank God I was wrong! This collection is a Beatles fans dream. The video looks great, they did an excellent job fixing up the picture no matter what the source, whether it be 16 mm film or old video tape the picture looks like it's from yesterday. Even flair in the early black and white footage is improved. Still they are not HD. The format is in HD but the original source material is not so don't expect it to look like Avatar. These videos were transferred at 4K quality but obviously they only play back in HD.
The audio is excellent but again it can only be as good as its source. Some of the Audio was taken from a mono source so the 5.1 track is "Limited" but much better then what you would expect. Most audio is mixed from the multi track masters of the studio recordings but the early tracks were recorded in primitive stereo (the first four records were originally released in mono but they recorded them as two tracks so they had better sound when mixed to mono). Tracks like "A Day In The Life" sound fantastic.
As for which version to buy, if you are a Beatles fan, buy the Deluxe Limited Edition while it's still around. The bonus disc has an additional 23 tracks including "Strawberry Feilds" and "A Day In The Life".
Overall I am very pleased with this set and it's a worthy edition to any music collection!!

Remastered version of the very popular Beatles 1 album expanded with two blurays filled with several hours of restored Beatles promo videos which include 5.1 mixes. Several songs contain commentary by Paul McCartney and video intros by Ringo. The restoration on the videos is sometimes breathtaking, but always very good... In some cases the quality really takes you back to the time in question. Some standouts were the Shea Stadium scenes, Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. Only video I thought was a bit off quality wise was for Real Love, formatted to what looks like 480p and blurry at best, odd because everything else, including footage shot on video from years earlier, look great! Should also mention a couple of the videos are just scenes from Yellow Submarine. The 5.1 mixes are mostly good and situate you in the sound, which works great for the early songs, rather than placing instruments around you. That being said, A Day In The Life and Strawberry Fields both sound amazing in surround, and Giles Martin definitely had some fun with those and a few other mixes. The packaging is a red slip case with a blue hard cover book/case which slides out. The book inside contains the detailed information for each song sandwiched between the cd and bluray jewel cases on the inside covers. Overall a great set of 50 (mostly) restored videos which have some great surround mixes and a remixed version of the classic compllation on CD... Hard to go wrong for any Beatles fan, new or old.

Nice to have 27 hits on 1 DVD - a couple I have not seen before, but glad to add to my collection. Not just for Beatle collectors, great for new fans also. You will fall in love with them all over again.

VIDEO:

'1' and "1+" by the Beatles arrives on blu-ray with MPEG-4 AVC 1080i/1080p 1.33/1.53/1.65/1.78: 1 encode (see below). The video footage was restored with the latest digital technology (4K/2K), sometimes frame by frame. The results are simply jaw-dropping. Excellent job!

AUDIO:

'1' and '1+' both arrive on blu-ray with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless tracks. Here, I really have missed feelings. When this set was first announced, I thought a blu-ray AUDIO disc, with the original studio versions finally arriving with high definition audio. This is not to be. The HD audio here are from the live tracks, NOT from studio versions. But the DTS sound is definitely more full, expanding, and revealing. I hope one day, a pure blu-ray Audio disc is released with the original studio versions in HD sound. That is my dream.

POSITIVE POINTS:

1 The restored video looks great with vibrant colours, and it is all HD for the first time.
2 In the second disc, there are additional 23 videos.
3 The set comes with an elegant, first-class hard cover 128-page book, with detailed description of each song plus colourful pictures. This book will be treasured.
4 The CD comes with newly remixed stereo, giving us heavenly sound, while retaining the original intentions of George Martin.

NEGATIVE POINTS:

1 The DTS-HD audio was not on the original studio master, but instead, restored from original live tracks. Major disappointment here.
2 Expensive.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This is a 'dream collection' of the Fab Four, done with lots of loving care. I was waiting for the price to drop to purchase this set. No such luck. Please buy the '1+ deluxe edition' with 2 blu-ray discs and 1 CD.
