Product Description

The Beatles in Mono
This is how most listeners first heard the group in the 1960s, when mono was the predominant audio format. Up until 1968, each Beatles album was given a unique mono and stereo mix, but the group always regarded the mono as primary.  In September 2014, The Beatles’ nine U.K. albums, the American-compiled Magical Mystery Tour, and the Mono Masters collection of non-album tracks will be released in mono on 180-gram vinyl LPs with faithfully replicated artwork. Newly mastered from the analogue master tapes, each album will be available both individually and within a lavish, limited 14-LP boxed edition, The Beatles In Mono, which also includes a 108-page hardbound book.

In an audiophile-minded undertaking, The Beatles’ acclaimed mono albums have been newly mastered for vinyl from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by GRAMMY(R)-winning engineer Sean Magee and GRAMMY(R)-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz.  While The Beatles In Mono CD boxed set released in 2009 was created from digital remasters, for this new vinyl project, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records without using any digital technology. Instead, they employed the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and by detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers.

Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of The Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.

Manufactured for the world at Optimal Media in Germany, The Beatles’ albums are presented in their original glory, both sonically and in their packaging. The boxed collection’s exclusive 12-inch by 12-inch hardbound book features new essays and a detailed history of the mastering process by award-winning radio producer and author Kevin Howlett. The book is illustrated with many rare studio photos of The Beatles, fascinating archive documents, and articles and advertisements sourced from 1960s publications.

I, like many Beatles' fans, have been wanting to hear the mono titles on vinyl and this set does not disappoint. The quality of the vinyl, pressed at Optimal in Germany, is quiet, flat and dynamic. The mastering is the big winner here: going from tape to cutting lathe makes all the difference in the world. This is my favourite re-release project of anything that Apple has released in the past 40 years and that is saying a lot. If you do not have the original UK mono pressings and you love the Beatles, this is a no brainer. I had an issue with one of the records in my set (the Sgt Pepper inserts were missing) and Amazon not only sent a new set within days but they allowed me to make sure my set was perfect. Universal, hear me out: please redo the stereo albums in the same fashion and know that you will have sold at least two copies of the set. Well done!

I can't remember the last time a purchase rewarded me as much as this vinyl edition. The vinyl is dead quiet. The sound is just incredible. After so many years of listening to CD, these songs/mixes were a HUGE improvement. It was as if the Beatles were in the living room. I've gotten to like songs I thought I hated. The realistic sound of their voices, instruments & effects are startling. Be sure to engage the MONO button on your receiver (or do-it-yourself with 2 stereo 'Y' connectors) to eliminate horizontal distortion. But this box is the living end.

I'm giving this 5-stars. It is absolutely fantastic. And, I thought the freaking Beatles were great before I heard this. These mono recordings prove without any doubt that The Beatles are the greatest musical artist of all time. If you're a Beatle fane, get this now and get it on vinyl. The mono recordings have punch and kick. I bought the stereo CD box set and was disappointed. I tried to force myself to like it. But years went on and I rarely played the stereo CD set. Then I bought a turntable and took the plunge. My new turntable is worth it just for the experience of this box set. The stereo versions of the first four albums are a joke in comparison to the mono recordings. People say that Help is muddled in mono, but if you turn the bass down and the treble up, it is far superior to the stereo mix. Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper, and the White Album really shine. I can't stop playing these records.

I received my "The Beatles in Mono" box set today. I wanted to hug the Canada Post guy, I was so excited to get this big box in the mail.
Opening it up and just staring at this huge chunk of white box in my living room, I was apprehensive about opening it up. I didn't want to unwrap it. Finally I gave in and opened it up to find the best thing I have bought in vinyl in a very long time. I immediately put revolver on my Dual turntable and let it spin. Hearing George's "Taxman" play in glorious Mono was perfection. I couldn't stop, I then played "The White Album" and so on. My afternoon was spent. When my girlfriend came home, "Hey Jude" was playing and I was in my chair grinning like the cat that ate the canary.
She laughed and asked why I was so happy, then she saw the boxset and just shook her head. My obsession with vinyl is tolerated, I don't drink or smoke. It is an expensive addiction, but it's my money and as long as I pull my weight, she doesn't get mad.

So if you are a Beatlemaniac or a Vinyl junky like me, do yourself an favour and get this boxset. You won't regret it.
Just don't buy coffee at Starbucks for a few months.

The sound? How do the songs sound? Will they grab me, affect me? How much better than other pressings, masterings can they sound? If you're asking those same questions, here's some thoughts. They sound right, correct, like they ought to. Some music, as you hear it, you just know it's got that indescribable quality of excellence. Arousing, awakening your senses. These records from this set imbue happiness & delight!

Absolutely brilliant! "THE BEST" Beatles reissue EVER! I've compared these remasters to the "original" Parlaphone pressings, Japanese pressings and the "stereo" vinyl remasters circa Sept 9th 2009 ( I also have the CD versions of the same ) and the Mo Fi's. This new mono vinyl reissue smokes ALL previous versions hands down. The "mono" versions were the only ones that the Beatles were actually present during the mixes as opposed to the "stereo" versions which were done with out their particpation and approval and mainly for the North American market. They were sourced from the original 2 track "first generation" analogue masters - NOT from digital copies of analogue masters. The pressings are DEAD quiet and glossy black, the fidelity is superb and you'd swear that these are actually "stereo" records! Not the 'narrow" band of sound stuck dead center between your speakers that many "old" mono recordings were but instead with a rather "enveloping" soundstage! Well worth every penny! The stereo CD's, both original and 2009 reissue, pale by comparison - the mono CD'scirca 2009 fair some what better. If you have a good turntable setup - go for the mono vinyl and hear "The Beatles" as the Beatles intended - you'll be glad you did.
