I think the author genuinely wants to inspire people, but I had a hard time getting into the story. There was no real complexity in the characters, and the inspirational wisdom seemed just too trite for me. I think it could have used more editing and planning, but I hope she tries again.

By Tami Brady HALL OF FAMETOP 100 REVIEWER on Dec 16 2010
Format: Hardcover
Beautiful Buttons is the story of Cathrine Ann. The book opens with Cathrine receiving an award for her success. As she steps forward to accept the award, her inner critic begins its damage. The exact words don't really matter much as we've all heard their like in our own heads-basically, you aren't good enough.

All her life, Cathrine wanted more, dreamed of something better. Hungry and alone, neglected and abused, she wanted something, anything to take her from her personal hell. That and someone to love her.

Yet, no matter how hard Cathrine tried, something seemed to always pull her back down. She'd get enough gumption to push forward just a little then find herself falling back two or three steps. She'd do everything and anything to get her son back then something would happen and he'd be back with Cathrine's mother. Then, she'd go through periods were she was her own worst enemy.

Beautiful Buttons is honest. The author owns her choices, mistakes, and heartaches fully. In telling her story she shows that healing though it does take time (and isn't always pretty) can happen. You can find happiness, success, and love. Maybe you can't have it all but you can live a good life nonetheless.

As you read Cathrine Ann's memoir, Beautiful Buttons, you cannot help but compare your own childhood and growth into adulthood, to the author's incredibly difficult life experiences. If you're like me, you'll realize very quickly that you have led a charmed life. I was riveted to Cathrine's book; at times in disbelief, and other times in awe, reflecting on how Cathrine was able to overcome her life obstacles and survive such tremendous challenges, such as poverty, verbal, physical and sexual abuse and a low self-image to name a few. Having an understanding of Cathrine's personal and business achievements and success of the last ten years only goes to punctuate in my mind that the human spirit can overcome great adversity and that a determined person can go on to be an inspiration to women, entrepreneurs and to individuals that believe that they are shaped by their past. Cathrine is such a person. You must read it to appreciate her challenges and life. Cathrine helps us to understand that our past does not need to equal our future. Her hunger for a better life showed her the way to a wonderful life and business.

Her story is painful to read and she certainly has been candid about very personal experiences which would be hard to discuss with a mental health professional never mind publish in a book. I have to give her credit for having the stomach to do it. The writing style is what I would expect from someone whose education was derived from the streets of life; it gives it realism. The message I have taken away is that even in a wealthy country like Canada, kids have fallen, and continue to fall through the cracks.

Beautiful Buttons is written in a direct, informal style that will quickly pull the reader in; this memoir is honest, brave and very blunt. Readers will be disturbed and deeply moved by the environment that Cathrine grew up in and around, not to mention the circumstances that she found herself in later on in life. Far from a tell-all sensation, Beautiful Buttons acts as a cathartic balm on the author's soul and provides hope and inspiration for anyone who feels used-up and beyond redemption. One of numerous themes and messages that are revealed to the reader is the knowledge that each and every person can make horrible mistakes, have numerous faults and commit acts of violence and crime, and STILL be able to redeem themselves. In essence, you are not defined how you were raised or by what you have done in the past; every human being has the right to hope for something better and to strive for greatness, no matter how far they have fallen. Cathrine's story isn't a feel-good memoir; it is very gritty, disturbing and it will deeply sadden many readers as she speaks openly about the physical, verbal, emotional and sexual abuse that she suffered as a child. She also confesses to terrible lapses in judgment, criminal/illegal activities, suffering from mental health issues, malnourishment, neglect, being raped, suffering from eating disorders, self-mutilation, prostitution, and the contemplation of suicide. Not for the feint of heart, Beautiful Buttons will take the reader on the journey through Cathrine Ann's life as she suffers, endures, falls and repeatedly picks herself back up. Do yourself a huge favour and pick up a copy of Beautiful Buttons to read, as soon as you can!
