Product Description

It’s two months into Ranmaru’s college career, and if he’s learned one thing, it’s that he’s really uncomfortable around other people. But when he stumbles into a zombie mob attack, he’s totally forced out of his comfort zone! Of course it’s just a movie shoot, but when he wakes up from his ignoble faint, he’s been whisked away behind the scenes with the Art Squad! Could this group of weirdos be what Ranmaru’s been looking for all his life?!

About the Author

Bisco Hatori made her manga debut with Isshun kan no Romance (A Moment of Romance) in LaLa DX magazine. The comedy Ouran High School Host Club is her breakout hit. When she's stuck thinking up characters' names, she gets inspired by loud, upbeat music (her radio is set to NACK5 FM). She enjoys reading all kinds of manga, but she's especially fond of the sci-fi drama Please Save My Earth and Slam Dunk, a basketball classic.

HASH(0xa46c5798) out of 5 stars Gentle Slice of Life Story Feb. 2 2016
By Talvi - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition
Behind the Scenes!! is a slice-of-life type of story by the mangaka of Ouran High School Host Club. Like that previous series, it's all about slow character development; with this title, our main character interacts with a group of special effects artists helping out various film clubs at the school. Not a lot happens here: we have a story of a guy with no focus in his life who finds he has a talent for FX and making things. What he takes as deficits in his character are actually traits uniquely suited for film making.

Story: Ranmaru Kurisu has run to the university to get away from a life of failures at his home. Son of humble fisher folk, his artistic nature continually disappointed those around him. But when he accidentally walks into a zombie movie set, he becomes caught up in the university's FX club. The members are always frantic - keeping up with directors of six different movie clubs and their outrageous demands. But whether making costumes or painstakingly crafting miniature buildings to be monster-stomped, Ranmaru knows just what to do to save the day. If he survives their hectic pace, he may realize he just found his perfect calling.

Hatori's works are always about the characters and here we are given detailed introductions to several members and directors. Clearly there are a lot more to come but most of the novel is Ranmaru being introduced and then solving key problems - from a ruined model to a costume snafu. All under the direction of charismatic club leader, Ryuji Goda. Each of the side characters have unique and well developed personalities.

This is definitely a cinemaphile work: all the characters are named after movie stars or parts they've played (e.g., the dog is named 'The Don' and various other protagonists are named after Sam Raimi, Sophia Coppola, Jean-Luc Godard - and main character Ranmaru Kurisu is named after Christopher Nolan (Kurisutofa Noran). The pace is fairly frenetic to mirror all that goes on behind a movie production.

Most of this volume 1 set the story/characters but it looks like a lot of the plot will involve problem solving various things through the different movie clubs. I'm not sure how much of an interest the author can maintain for those not invested in the movie world but certainly Ouran High School Host Club proved successful on a similarly surprising tangent. For now, we'll see where this goes. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

HASH(0xa46c57ec) out of 5 stars Artists Need Apply March 3 2016
By P. Romance - Published on
Format: Paperback
From the creator of Ouran Host Club, Bisco Hatori brings us a new manga featuring the Art Squad Club – a hodgepodge of artists that create the awesome backgrounds for their college’s film clubs. Since I’m a huge Ouran Host Club fan and an aspiring artist, I was excited for this manga’s debut. After reading the manga, I found it slightly refreshing. Instead of a high school setting, the characters are a little older and takes place at the university level. The lead character is a timid guy that is used to being told he is useless. Ranmaru, the hero, will be saying “I’m sorry” and “It’s my fault” a lot. He is not annoying since he does have talent and will save the day. He is just a sweetie. However, Ranmaru easily gets overshadow by the other club members. But mostly by the club leader, Ryuji. Ryuji easily upstages the hero. There are a lot of people in this series and so, this volume is a little superficial as it establishes characters. There is a beginning of character development but not enough yet. Each chapter have interesting drama and a new plot.

As of right now, I’m definitely going to buy the next volume to see what happens next. I hate to compare but this manga didn’t have that addictive quality that Host Club had. So, it is not a Host Club clone. But I’m optimistic. There is no romance yet. There was a hint of it at the final page but I think it will be a while. The artwork is pretty as ever and I didn’t see any spelling errors. Overall, I’m going to support the series. If you like shoujo manga, in general, give it a try.
HASH(0xa46c5c24) out of 5 stars Ouran High College Movie Club! June 24 2016

Fish out of water kid from a rural backwater (who has mad problem solving skills and can MacGyver things liek whoah) comes to a big city school and literally runs into the artsy kids who make the sets for the campus movie clubs. As he brings his mad problem solving skills and MacGyver-ing (hah.) techniques to bear he discovers He Has A Place In This World. Frenetic, funny, and fun with a lot of little nods to the movie industry: The characters are named after directors, lots of references to films peppered throughout, descriptions of behind the scenes roles, etc.

One thing that I'm slow to love: The protagonist Ranmaru (although really he shares that distinction with the head of the club, Gouda Ryuuji) is like a Chihuahua with floppy hair and a glue gun-- he's just *SO* stressed out and insecure that at times all the super deformity and ZOMG!freakouts are so wearing. That said, Suoh Tamaki (OHSHC) was similarly frantic and he grew on me, so whatever. The pages in which Ranmaru pulls things together and comes up with a solution make up for all the tear showers and flipping out. It is what it is.

Overall a fun read! Stoked that VIZ Media snagged the license for this one. Can't decide whether to preorder the next 2 (3?) volumes or buy them in Japanese because I can't wait to read more.

HASH(0xa46c5fcc) out of 5 stars A misfit finds himself in the right place at the right time March 29 2016

The other day, I stopped by a comics shop. I bought a Deadpool graphic novel to check out whether this character lives up to the hype he's been getting and since Amazon had suggested Behind the Scenes!! as something I might find interesting I picked up a copy of that too. I was not impressed with Deadpool (As far as anti-heroes go, Harley Quinn has a better sense of humor and Grendel more style) but Amazon guessed right that I would like this manga; it's very charming. I was reminded of an old favorite, Genshiken, as both are about the people in a Japanese university club. The theme is a classic one. A misfit, dismissed by most as useless, finds people who help him see that he does have worthwhile abilities. Behind the Scenes!! focuses on a club providing sets and costumes for the university's various film clubs which means our characters have to put up with people who have way too much artistic temperament. It has a nice gentle sense of humor that is sometimes touching and the cast is quite likeable, so it warrants a positive recommendation.
