In his follow-up to Lunatic Heroes, Martignetti sheds all defenses to reveal the viscera of a mind shaped by the dark and confusing forces of his childhood. This collection of memoirs and essays focuses mainly on Martignetti's adult years, and features the pivotal characters of his ever-entertaining personal narrative. From the cascade of memories and emotions triggered by an accidental butterfly killing in "Cocoon Talk," to the homicidal impulses prompted by a visit to his boyhood home in "Sign," from the heartbreaking to the hilarious musings inspired by beloved pets in "Mochajava" and "Dog," and throughout the uncensored sexcapades of "Mad," "The Wild," and "Feast of the Hungry Ghost," Martignetti's colloquial, humorous, and intimate style will keep you riveted, crack you open, enthrall and embrace you with an honesty normally reserved for not even the closest of friends.

Martignetti is a master story teller! He pulls the reader into a rocket ship of memory, insight and even madness so deftly that we feel every facet in the kaleidescope of his journey and are happy to be part of the wild ride. Martignetti spares no one, least of all himself, while offering up his soul to be examined. Each compelling chapter builds a foundation of understanding. We are at once charmed and terrified while being schooled in the very essence of self-discovery and redemption, loving every minute of it! I highly recommend this book; it'll knock your socks off!

It's hard for me to speak like a detached party--someone who just happened upon and accidentally began reading about the confessions of a local therapist. I knew Anthony as we trained together at the Danielsen. I hope the courageous step you have taken brings you the peace and acceptance that you seek. I loved you as we knew each other many years ago...and I love you all the more now.

His world will rock your world - a fantastic read
Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2014Verified Purchase
Anthony Martignetti has a unique voice and style. He caught us in his world with his first collection of autobiographical stories, Lunatic Heroes. Now, in Beloved Demons, he tears us deliciously apart with a brutally honest exploration of his own thoughts, ecstasies, and terrors. It is an entertaining and almost compulsive page-turner. Most of the stories in Beloved Demons unfold themes of sex and love that keep us glued to his words. It is sexual but never cheap. Rather, it digs mercilessly into the honesty of his feelings during the amazing encounters in his life and reminds us of all the things we keep hidden from each other. Anthony is, in addition to being a great story-teller, an incredibly insightful psychologist. In the story, “Swept,” he refers to an almost uncanny ability to read people’s thoughts that surprised him at first before he learned to trust it. In Beloved Demons he turns his professional scalpel on himself and offers the reader a naked roller coaster ride. When it’s over, you will want more. You will be adrenalin drained, satisfied, and wasted. And you will be infected with an almost scary need to deepen your own self-reflection. It is an experience not to be missed.
