Product Description

Life has taught Ivey Jones early on that with trust come pain and betrayal. Out of survival she has created walls around her to keep anyone from getting too close. Though she lives in her dream house in the Rocky Mountains and loves being the owner of the town's quirky little bookstore Serendipity, her life is narrow and governed by strict rules that she never deviates from…until Cal Bennett enters her life.

For the past nine years Calvin “Cal” Bennett has stayed away from Ivey, thinking she deserved better than to be saddled with a single dad who has never been good at relationships. Until a few chance encounters show him what he’s been missing and he can’t stay away any longer.

Little does he know he’s got a fight on his hands that he might not be equipped to win. Shadows from Ivey's past lurk in the dark, ready to strike and bring her low once and for all. But Cal swears he will do whatever it takes to break through that wall of steel to win Ivey’s heart and keep her safe.

I thought this was pretty good for a debut novel.
Having had a violent and tragic life, Ivey is an extremely cautious person. Despite people's desire to really know her, Ivey never allows anyone too close, and she never dates! Her few relationships with men are purely physical, and always on her terms- sex only, with no chance for anything more. She is safe behind her emotional walls, and happy with her life the way it is, or is she? The people closest to her have started to call her on it, and she is beginning to wonder if she is missing out. When sexy, single dad, Cal decides he wants her and will do everything he can to win her, despite her protests, Ivey's walls start to crumble. After all she has been through, can she let go and learn to trust again?
This reads very much like a Kristen Ashley book. As a HUGE KA fan, (in my opinion nobody does romance better) I can understand a desire to emulate her work, but there are a lot of similarities here. The writing style, the descriptions, the setting, and especially the dialogue are definitely reminiscent of KA, but the story is it's own. The characters were likeable, and generally well developed, and the story itself flowed fairly well (despite being repetitive) and was well paced. There are definitely editing issues, and the story could use some fine tuning, but it isn't so bad as to make it unreadable.
All in all, I enjoyed this book, and I think this author has great potential. I will be looking for more of her work.

Review of Bent not Broken by Julia Goda
Review done for Hooked on Books
4 ½ out of 5 stars

Ivey Jones only knows abuse. She was abused by her father and then was abused by her last boyfriend. She dreams of the fairytale type of love but doesn’t think she deserves it.
Ivey runs away to the Rocky Mountains to escape from her past. She buys a bookstore and her dream house. She has even made some new friends.
Cal Bennett noticed Ivey 9 years ago but has kept his distance. She wouldn’t want to be saddled down with a single father and young son.
After running into Ivey a few times, Cal is changing his mind. It is time to make Ivey his and he will do whatever he has to do; including breaking down the walls around her heart.
Ivey is afraid to let Cal into her heart. She loves him and his son but is scared that Cal will run when he knows the truth about her past.
When her nightmares find her, Ivey’s life is in danger.
I loved this book. Ivey is a beautiful person inside and out. Cal is smoking hot and a true alpha male. He is commanding in and out of the bedroom.
The only setback was a little but of repetition but overall a fantastic book. I definitely recommend this book to read.

Right off the bat I'm going to say I was really entertained by the story in this book. It had a lot of unputdownable moments, and I was captivated by most of the book. This was my first read of Julia Goda and I will definitely read her again.

This story was written in mostly the first person POV of the heroine (Ivey), we do however get snippets from the heroes (Cal) third person POV.

Ivey survived some very heartbreaking traumas in her past and was, understandably so, very closed off because of it. In this story we get to watch her come into the light and shed that past. It's a beautiful thing. What's more beautiful is getting to watch the sexy, possessive, protective, alpha Cal help her do it, with the help of his mini alpha son!!

Their story is steamy, sweet, heartbreaking, uplifting, and funny with a little bit of action & suspense thrown in!

Lastly if you are, as I am, a hug Kristen Ashley fan I felt that this had a huge KA feel to it so if that is something you look for... look no further.

I would definitely recommend this to contemporary romance fans.
