Product Description

Review

`This will surely be the standard edition of Beowulf' Dr Margaret Connolly, University College, Cork

`very student user-friendly' Dr J. A. George, Uninversity of Dundee

`it will be most useful and exactly the kind of student edition that has long been needed' Dr William Marx, University of Wales, Lampeter

`This up-to-date edition it a godsend.' Peter J. Lucas, University College, Dublin

We have long been waiting for it.' Professor Dr Heinz Bergner, Justus-Liebig-Universitat Giessen

`presents its familiar material in a conspicuously rejuvenated way...This edition follows a current trend towards providing most of the material necessary for the study of a major work within a single volume...The introduction has detailed and authoritative discussions of all the major aspects of the poem, apart from general critical interpretation, for which the reader is referred to items in the extensive bibliography.' English

`This fully annotated edition makes the poem Beowulf more accessible in its original language, and provides the materials necessary for its detailed study by those new to Old English.' The Medieval World

`Students working through Beowulf in the original language for the first time ... may find themselves grateful for this compact, efficient, and inexpensive introduction to the poem. Every part of Jack's text is presented with meticulous accuracy - a welcome virtue in publications of this kind. References are brief but apt, expert, and up-to-date.' John D. Niles, University of California, Berkeley, Speculum - A Journal of Medieval Studies, Jan 1997

Format: Paperback
Jack's Beowulf is currently the best student edition (undergrad & non-specialist grad) available. The student's progress through the text is fluent and full, and is made so by the accurate and usable glosses that are conveniently placed on the right margin of each text page. The book is light on supporting commentary and ancillary helps, but its up-to-date bibliography makes any such inclusions redundant. The serious student of this important poem will need to advance, however, to Klaeber's still authoritative edition. This is so because the guiding hand of the glossary in Jack's edition will subtly and inevitably direct the student towards the editor's own overall reading of the poem and away from his own. Ideally, one should read Beowulf free of glossary and with only a minimum of attention to commentary. The reader's best friend here will be the unmatched Bosworth-Toller Anglo-Saxon Lexicon. The thrifty student may substitute J.R. Clark Hall's Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary. Also, try to keep the full OED handy.

HASH(0xa2de9450) out of 5 stars Best for Students Jan. 24 2007

I would recommend this book to beginners of OE study. Glossaries on the right side of text decrease the difficulty of OE texts and make them more accessible. My professor recommended this book to me and I see that this one is really a good choice for any student.

I was struggling with Klaeber's Beowulf, having to look things up so often. By having glosses on the same page, this edition made it much easier going.
HASH(0xa2de9624) out of 5 stars This is a great edition for the student of Old English May 9 2016

This is a great edition for the student of Old English. However, Jack's gloss is sometimes questionable. If you have experience with the language, then I'd suggest keeping a good Anglo-Saxon dictionary at hand.
