I picked up this book while searching for a story where the male lead is mean to the female lead (I am a sucker for angsty story) and SHOCK, it’s like stumbling upon a gold mine. This is most likely one of the better novels I’ve read under romantic suspense category. The storyline is well-written, realistic, fast paced, and pack with actions. The romance leaves you hot and bothered (if you are okay with rough sex scenes). Marc is the rough kind of guy, but when he loves, he LOVES (in his own way). Kingsley (Marc’s friend and fellow mercenary) is suave, funny, and endearing. Lily is feisty, unexpectedly kick ass, kind hearted and has an aura of innocence to her that I enjoyed.

Marc is contracted by the Bratva (Russian mafia) to steal blood diamonds from a dangerous local gang. Lily is hired to transport these diamonds to Moscow and deliver them directly into the Pakahn’s (Russian equivalent of the Godfather) hand. We learn later that this is it for Lily, the last stretch of a five years crusade to avenge her sister.

Marc and Lily have been in each other’s presence for the last month and there is this mutual attraction between them. They act upon it right after Marc completes his contract and part ways with Lily leaving for Moscow. The local gang tracks him to his boarding house and Marc believes Lily set him up. He escapes the gang, and ambushes Lily on the outskirts of Monrovia. A fight ensues, with Lily giving as much as she has (which surprises Marc). Marc manages to subdue her, but not before she activates the safe embedded into the car and wired to explosives. Now that they are at a stalemate, they agree on a plan.

Only a little over a year ago she came out of nowhere with a fresh story, and it wasn't a fluke. The awesomeness just keeps coming! Best Laid Plans is not like anything most of us have been reading. It is essentially a romance, but it's actually so much more. Action! Action! Action!

BLP has a rich background. It isn't just the guy, the girl and the relationship struggles. There are several countries, dilemmas, people, props, ideas. . . It's obvious that the author really researched her material. What goes into being a mercenary? What's it like to go in a store in a certain country? How does the land and weather differ from place to place? Every weapon, every conversation, every move—it all feels realistic.

If you're like me, you appreciate when a character isn't wimpy, but often, the alternative is so unbelievable. BLP has badasses you can really sink your teeth into. They're tough as nails, but they're not invincible or overinflated.

Marc is a mercenary. If you've got the dime, he's got the time. He's a thief and a murderer, but he's big on honor. Marc is 6 feet of sexy, gruff warrior. Lily is a transporter. It's her job to get highly desirable and stolen goods from point A to point B. She's super strong and brave in this male-dominated environment; yet, she still retains her femininity. Law is a supporting character. He's a more refined version of Marc for when a sleeker approach is necessary.

This story is full of great dialogue, steamy sex, car chases, shootouts, fistfights and exotic locales. I enjoyed every single second, and I cannot wait for the next book in series.

She only prepared for her revenge, not for the mercenary who would destroy it

From erotic/dark to contemporary/romance and to a romantic/suspense, Stylo Fantome will always manage to surprise me, and truthfully, what an amazing feat that is for an author to manage. Rare is it to find a well rounded author who is capable of writing different genres and still captivate and enthrall her readers to a point where you’d think that her novels were like candies being fed to a six year old child (seriously, have you ever tried taking away candy from a six year old child? It’s pure hell, trust me!) So far, I’ve had the opportunity to read every single novel of Stylo Fantome’s (except at the time of writing this review I have not read nor reviewed Out of Plans, the second book of this series) and Best Laid Plans was a complete surprise compared to every other work so far. We meet Lily, a woman hell bent on avenging her sister’s murder and going so far as going ‘undercover’ – you see, she’s not affiliated to any police agency – with the murderer to get as close as possible to him to get her chance at him. Lily is imperfect in the sense that she has flaws, she screws up, she loses her temper and she tries to implement a plan that doesn’t always go smoothly, but she is strong, brave and doesn’t back down.
