Make the Most of Your Bialetti Moka Express!
To ensure proper usage and to increase longevity for your Bialetti Moka Express, the following are directions for optimal care and for the best tasting results:
- Fill the lower chamber with cold water just below the valve.
- Insert the funnel and fill it with ground espresso (do not tamp). Remove any coffee grounds on the edge of the funnel
- Tightly screw the upper part of the pot on to the base. Avoid using the handle for leverage.
- Select burner size to fit bottom of pot. For gas stovetop, make sure the flame is not larger than bottom of pot. The flame should not come around the sides of the pot.
- Place pot on the stovetop until the water boils and coffee begins to come out of the center post. There will be a gurgling sound during this process.
- When the top of the pot is full of coffee, remove from stove.
- Before pouring coffee, stir it in the upper chamber with a small spoon to equalize all the different coffee layers for optimum flavor.

The Original Bialetti Moka Express
The Bialetti Moka celebrates more than 80 years of classic design elegance and technological simplicity. From the early 1950s to the present day, Bialetti has manufactured over 200 million coffee makers. In particular, the Moka Express has become iconic and has allowed millions of consumers to enjoy great Italian coffee. The Moka produces a rich, authentic espresso in just minutes. The aluminum pot features Bialetti’s distinctive eight-sided shape that allows it to diffuse heat perfectly to enhance the aroma of your coffee.
Use coffee ground specifically for a moka coffee maker. Don't use too fine ground coffee. Periodically check the funnel, the filter plate and the washer for wear. Over time, they may need to be replaced. Never use the pot without water. Never use other contents besides coffee like teas, cacao powder or instant coffee as it will clog the filter plate. If the heat is too high, coffee may have a burnt taste. Getting the optimum temperature for brewing may take some trial and error. Store coffee grounds in airtight container, away from sunlight. Use filtered water for best coffee flavor.

The one big difference is with the size. My old 3 cup was noticeably larger - and yes it was a 3 cup. This even uses the exact same size 3 cup rubber gaskets. The filter basket of the old one fits the diameter of this exactly, except the stem is longer, because the size of the old reservoir was taller (larger).
If you've owned one of the older 3 cup ones I'd probably recommend going a size up and getting a 4 cup. They look to be closer in size to the old 3 cup
One thing to keep in mind is that I have to tighten it with all my strength in order to get a tight seal. Otherwise it leaks pressure the coffee stream sputters and isnt smith. It requires a lot of force, which is okay, but it's just not so pleasant to exert myself early in the morning. I thought I had a defective moka pot so I returned it and bought another one and it behaves exactly the same.
Personally I don't like moka pot coffee. After using it for a few months I find I very much prefer French press.
I got this because I didn't have the space or the money to get a 600$ pump style espresso machine, now I don't think I would ever bother.
It's bulletproof, easy to clean, and you probably will never need to replace the screen or oring in your lifetime.
Huge plus is it acts like a pump style espresso machine by using pressure in the bottom generated by the steam to force the water through the stem and coffee. Because of this it is perfect temperature everytime and will never burn or be under temperature on any stove.
Once the water boils in the base, the process is pretty quick. Easy to clean the filter for the grinds and main coffee chamber.
One cautionary note; the handle can melt of put directly over heat. I melted the first one I owned, so now, I keep the handle off to the side of the element. Otherwise, simple to use and virtually maintenance free
