I'm a second year design student who has been dorking out over good design books lately. This one looked to be the grandaddy of all layout books so I saved up and bought it. I was severely disappointed with it. I thought it would be inspirational and helpful, but most of the layouts that are shown are so dated and tacky looking that I mostly just got ideas on what not to do. There are a few great layouts, but I feel like, on the whole, this book just doesn't cut it. I will say that it looks good on my shelf, though...

1.0 out of 5 stars Time and money pit Aug. 1 2009

Generally when reading reviews you get a handle on the type of book/product you are about to purchase, I found these reviews to be inaccurate. This book is very conservative in the type of work that is shown, It had old stuffy work that was anything but inspiring and definitely not "inspiring" and there was nothing "Cutting edge" what so ever inside. It is the most un-creative book I have ever purchased in my life. It is something that may be worth picking up at a garage sale for a quarter, even then, it would be taking up valuable space on my book shelf.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Okay. Oct. 21 2008

A mixed bag of layouts and samples. A few too many are low quality and pixilated images to rate this any higher than 3 stars. Overall not bad and not great.

1.0 out of 5 stars HUGE Disappointment Jan. 23 2010
By N. Weinberg - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
As a Parsons School of Design May 2010 graduate, I felt this book was extremely disappointing. I bought The Big Book of Layouts as a gift for a friend who makes layouts for a living and thought it was extremely disappointing. The designs inside are for the most part unoriginal and boring. I was expecting innovative and unique layouts that would be inspiring, but instead I got layouts that look as if they were made on a Microsoft program. Avoid purchasing this book at all costs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy with BBofL Nov. 19 2008

Format: Paperback
The art school I go to was always referring to this book, and I saw a friend of mine drool over it while at Barnes and Noble. I think it's definitely worth the cash, and a fantastic reference tool. There's a little bit of older, outdated work in there, but overall the book is great.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book Feb. 23 2009

As a 15 years expert of the industry, this book is great, fully packed with nice applicable designs. I recommend it to my students, lots of examples on both fine designs and designs to avoid.

it is a must have.
