As a social studies teacher, this is the most important book to come out during the course of my career.
I have been using the materials in this book for some time now, by using the historicalthinking.ca website along with the preview chapter. Because of this, I had to get the entire book.
It is quite amazing what I have been able to achieve by using the ideas offered here. I have C+ students attaining a level of thinking that I never would have thought possible. I am also able to really push my high achieving students in ways that surprise them. Using the ideas in this book takes adjustment, but the materials here will push any teacher to do better.

The Big Six breaks down the six components of historical thinking (Historical Significance, Evidence, Continuity and Change, Cause and Consequence, Historical Perspectives and The Ethical Dimension) into what they call Teaching Guideposts, or subtopics related to each of the major components. Each chapter is devoted to one of the six historical thinking concepts. The authors use published authors and their works to illustrate the concept under discussion. For example, chapter 1 is about historical significance, and Timothy Brook's book Vermeer's Hat: The Seventeenth Century and the Dawn of the Global World is used to illustrate how Brook began with a painting by Johannes Vermeer to explain the rise of global trade in the seventeenth century. The best part of the book is the suggested activities that follow the explanation of the historical thinking concept. The activities are generic and can be adapted to any topic. The Big Six doesn't offer anything new to history teachers looking to introduce historical thinking concepts to their classroom, but the activities are helpful. Ignorance of Canadian history slowed my reading of the book, since most examples are taken from Canadian history. However, I did learn about the Dionne quintuplets and other stories. The Big Six is valuable tool in planning a history curriculum based on historical thinking. It would also help in planning lessons related to Common Core standards.

If you're nervous about implementing theHistorical Thinking Concepts into your classroom, this is a fantastic book which clearly outlines how to teach the concepts WITHIN the content.

Half teacher training, and half useful lessons, is book is a MUST buy for any history teacher.

Some flaws are that there are only a couple of lessons for each concept, and there are no clear assessment tools ( rubrics, etc). Most of the lessons need to be adapted for my classroom, although the e maples are helpful and guidelines.

Speaking of guidelines, the " guideposts" for each concept tell the look- for's as far s student understanding, which is helpful when creating a marking scheme or rubric.
