General info. that can be found on the internet with VERY minimal googling. Save your money for the cruise. Would not buy if I have gone to the bookstore instead of a .com address

HASH(0x9cca9f3c) out of 5 stars Nice Overview! Oct. 29 2011

I enjoyed reading this book on the Disney Cruise Line. It has lots of helpful and fun information and is an easy read. I liked the light humor sprinkled in too. It takes you step by step throughout the process, from the information gathering stage until embarkation. The Birnbaum books have been part of my life since my Mother planned our very first WDW vacation and I am delighted to be able to use it as a reference for my own family vacation planning!

HASH(0x9cca9f00) out of 5 stars Disney Goes to Alaska? Feb. 22 2012
By Disney Girl - Published on

You wouldn't know it from this book. While it is very helpful with general information about the ships, it is very Orlando/Los Angeles minded. If you are sailing out of Port Canaveral, it's an excellent guide book, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are looking for information about Alaska. Everything in the book I've already read on the DCL Website.

HASH(0x9cda8210) out of 5 stars surprisingly worthless June 23 2012
By Aaron Klebanoff - Published on
Format: Paperback
We've purchased Birnbaum's guides in the past, and so I was amazed at how little added information was available. The book has side-bars and "hot tips" with information that you'd hope would be helpful. Most of it I had already read on the web, and what I hadn't seen was of little value.

For example, one "hot tip" points out that there's a "drink of the day" and that it is "often available at a special price". How about giving us a price range to expect? Castaway Cay is Disney's utopian private island, but this book provides only one small page that reads like an advertisement and tells you nothing new about it not described in any Disney brochure, and the remainder of the section describes Disney's excursions -- with the same level detail provided by Disney. How about telling us how long it takes to get off the ship? How about telling us a good way to carry passports, and if they're even needed to get off here? How about telling us if & where there are lockers and if so, are they readily available? Similarly for other ports of call, suggestions on what to expect from locals, how to deal with local transportation, timing, etc are all lacking.

On the ship information also reads like an advertisement and is sadly lacking. For example, Disney's wonderful shows are given in a theater that cannot possibly hold all of its guests. Is there advice on how early you must show up to get a good seat, and/or how often shows are given and when best to show up to make sure you don't miss a show that you were really hoping to see. Is there typically a wait for the Aquaduck, and if so, how long, and what time of day is best to miss lines, etc.

While I think Disney does a great job at entertaining, hence my interest in their cruises, I still think these types of questions are reasonable to ask and are not available in brochures, and a good guide would think to address them. This guide does not. So, if you're looking to read more of the same, you'll get the Disney's brochures repeated here. But if you're looking for practical information beyond a brochure, look elsewhere.

HASH(0x9cda8708) out of 5 stars Glorified Brochure Nov. 10 2011
By Stephanie Crow - Published on

I do NOT recommend this book. I have purchased Passporter's Guide for Disney Cruise Line before for the Disney Cruise Line and it was very helpful. I got this book, Birnbaum's Disney Cruise Line 2012 in hopes to get some more/different information and I'm greatly disappointed. It is nothing more than a glorified brochure/magazine. I will be ordering the Passporter's Guide for further references.
