PRAISE for THE BIRTH PARTNER

“Penny Simkin shows how giving support in childbirth is not only a matter of helping a woman through labor and delivery—important though that is—but also of enabling her to cherish a meaningful memory of birth.” – Sheila Kitzinger, author of Rediscovering Birth and The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth

“A clearly written book that describes what really happens in our maternity units. I recommend it highly for both parents and a supportive friend.” – Marshall Klaus, M.D., author of Bonding, Your Amazing Newborn and Mothering the Mother

The most helpful book I read before giving birth. I purchased it for my husband to read but read it before he did. It reinforced and expanded on what we learned in our prenatal class as the nurse that taught it based a lot of the class on Penny Simkin's teachings. It helps you get your head around labour and delivery and if anything can prepare you it is studying and following the advice in this book!

My husband and I both love this book. So much information! Great details. Great suggestions for coping with labour. Great for helping your labour coach/partner resolve anxieties about what is to come. I'd definitely recommend this book to all new parents and labour partners.

Love this book for both partner and mom. My partner read it first, and enjoyed how detailed and technical it was compared to most books targeting dad. I'm now reading it and finding it to be the most helpful book on labor so far. Many books focusing on natural child birth are very left, all about enjoying and breathing through, this is a more comprehensive and realistic guide of how to cope together through the process as a couple. Highly recommended!

When faced with fatherhood, my wife purchased some books for my researching the next phase of our life alongside her. I found many of them too jovial in tone or focused on areas I didn't think our relationship needed ("pay attention to her, she'll like that.") Recommended at a pre-natal class, this book has what I needed: clear subjects and language with a lot of cross-references for helping my wife and I build our plans. Easy to read and a great resource, I highly recommend it over "What to Expect" books or any other someone new might be considering. Good luck to all who choose this book.

Bought this book as a second time mom and it is such a great tool. It may be meant for birth partners but I read it myself and it had so much fantastic info for myself. My husband also read it and it really helped prepare him aswell for what the birth may look like. I will re read it for every one of my pregnancies

This book is a bit repetitive but I used it at the recommendation of my midwife and I did find some good tips for labour. I ended up having a really fast labour and I think this book did help me cope with that since I was not able to get an epidural. I'll definitely read it again before #2.
